ST. JOSEPH, United States (AFP) - US Vice President Richard Cheney said he was apalled by what he described as the "lack of respect" shown by Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry (news - web sites) to the interim leader of Iraq (news - web sites) Iyad Allawi.
Allawi met President George W. Bush (news - web sites) at the White House earlier Thursday and addressed a rare joint session of the US Congress where he told lawmakers: "We are succeeding in Iraq."
Speaking in Columbus, Ohio, shortly after Allawi's speech, Kerry said the interim Iraqi premier was painting an unrealistically upbeat picture of the situation in his homeland.
Kerry's comments drew a sharp rebuke from the vice president just 40 days before Americans go to the polls on November 2 to cast their presidential ballots.
"I must say I was appalled at the complete lack of respect Senator Kerry showed for this man of courage when he rushed to hold a press conference and attack the prime minister, a man America must stand beside to defeat the terrorists," Cheney told an audience in St. Joseph, Missouri.
"John Kerry is trying to tear down all the good that has been accomplished, and his words are destructive to our effort in Iraq and in the global war on terror.
"As Prime Minister Allawi said in his speech, and I quote, 'When political leaders sound the siren of defeatism in the face of terrorism, it only encourages more violence,'" Cheney added.
This is good. Kerry only says he can succeed in diplomacy. Today was evidence he has no clue. He just POed a major oil supplier in the future. Hardly good for the US. Repubs can really sow doubts about having his hand guiding anything bigger than a wind surf board.
Fox played the clip of Cheney saying this earlier today and I went looking for an article but couldn't find one at the time.
Thank you for posting this. He was appalled as all decent people were by Kerry spitting on Allawi coming to this country and thanking us for what we did.
Thank you VP Cheney for speaking plainly.
I can see it now. Hillary will not ride to the rescue of the RATS. Instead, Dukaksi will show up in his tank blast Kerry out of the water, standf in his place and actually win MA to avoid Bush's otherwise clean sweep of states.
With Kerry, some things haven't changed since the early 70's. He is still anti-war, anti-American. He "will" place this country and it's citizens in harms way if he is once agin given the chance.
You aren't the only one appalled, Mr. Vice President. This sphincter Kerry just can't help himself. He must be flashing back to his early VVAW days......doing all he can to undermine his own country's war effort.
They have unmuzzled Teresa again and now he makes these comments. He knows he cannot win by going after the single issue of the Iraq war.
I think he just wants to go back to his rich life and vacations. When the reality of the campaign finally hit him, and it took awhile, as he is pretty dense, he came to the conclusion he would rather just go back to the senate.
I think he also knows memogate will not go away and it will eventually lead right to his campaign.
When he loses big time there will be plenty of people to blame.
I can't wait for the Bush campaign to put out a commercial (at least I HOPE they do, anyway) showing that "once a traitor to America, always a traitor to America" - they could intersperse clips of Kerry's 1971 war crimes testimony with his defeatist speech from today and yesterday and highlight how "once again, he's putting our troops in danger"
Anyone know if they have anything planned along these lines?
If he is trying to loose I think Kerry just gave himself the coup de grace when he arrogantly criticized the Iraqi Prime Ministers speech and presumed to know more than the people intimately involved in the day to day operations in Iraq. What a maroon.
This man must go down in flames. I find it hard to believe that God would help put this low life into office at this time in our history.
Notice how Kerry stated that he wanted victory (...but because of the arrogance of this President) but phrased it in a "...I've always stated I want victory" not "It goes without saying..." Quite telling.
The "I've said from Day 1" rant begs the question "Which Day One?" The day that Hussein invaded Kuwait when he went on to vote against a coalition that he now says is lacking? September 11, the Axis of Evil speech, the October 2002 vote, the day he announced his candidacy, the day he voted against the 87 billion troop support package, etc. etc. etc.?
W will need notes in the debate primarily to get the history straight of Kerry's flip-flopping.
In fact that would be a clever tactic. When W goes to explain the many positions of Kerry, he could pretend to not find a particular Kerry quote while shuffling papers in vain, then giving up and quipping: "I could try to put these in chronological order but in the final analysis, what's the point. Senator Kerry has been all over the place that it's hard to remember what he believed from week to week. So let's start with this week."
Something along those lines.
this jerk screams about international help and insults an prime minister. remenber in 91 we had over 100 countries go to kuwait with us and he still voted against the resolution. what a piece of crap!!
Because he's pompous, arrogant, and gets paid for doing NOTHING. He just thinks he's tooo good to actually work.
As a guy, I'd to like this POS embedded with a few ounces of moth-balls in his nether-saggy part of his anatomy. Then, of course, his wife can air out her mansions. Complimements of her dead Republican Heinz business-man. /barf alert
If he did win(h-hhemm), hows he gonna square all this talk when he starts making phone calls? OMG this guy sucks.
Yeah; what would HE know? He only lives there. If the people really want to know what's going on, they need to ask the all-knowing John F'n Kerry, even if he's never been to Iraq. He WAS in Vietnam, after all. < /sarcasm >
My liberal daughter and her liberal friend have decided they are going to WRITE IN a vote (2 that is) for Gephart?! They don't like Bush, but they don't like Kerry at all. Thats 2 more votes he is losing here in Florida.
Yep...the same man who continues to claim that Bush "went at it alone" in Iraq, a statement that insults the British, Australians, Italians, Japanese, and all other nations who went in with us, and have suffered losses in the war.
What respect would this man receive from the leaders of those nations?
Kerry is doing now exactly what he did in 1971. The real Kerry has finally stood up.
Potty mouth!
Here, go use this.
The dude has no idea when to say nothing...I can't wait for next Thursday! Wow...what fun W will have with him. I wonder which Iraq position he'll have by next week?
