NBC's Lisa Myers Reports
Kerry campaign says timing of 'Fortunate Son' ad campaign, 60 Minutes story a 'coincidence'
Having acknowledged that its own standards were violated, CBS News named an independent panel to investigate what went wrong: Former Republican Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and retired chief of the Associated Press Louis Boccardi.
The investigation focuses on the process that led to airing possibly fraudulent documents challenging the President's military service and why the CBS Producer put the source of those documents, longtime Bush critic Bill Burkett, in touch with the Kerry Campaign before the story aired.
Journalism expert Robert Steele says, "The producer in this case was already operating in an ethical minefield. She squirted gasoline on the explosives when she made that connection."
Republicans launched a frontal attack on CBS, accusing the network of "a serious lapse in judgment" beyond the initial report in not suspending producer Mary Mapes and apologizing only for the documents rather than retracting the story itself.
Republicans said the Kerry Campaign clearly knew something about the CBS Report before it aired.
Terry Holt of the Republican National Committee says, "We think they should come clean and answer the question, 'what information did you obtain and what did you intend to do with it?'"
The day before the CBS report, Democrats began a concerted attack on the President's National Guard record.
However, the Kerry Campaign insists it knew nothing about the CBS documents, claiming the timing was a coincidence.
IF you believe that hogwash I've some ocean front property in Death Valley to sell.
the more the kerry camp spouts off these lies, the more $$$$ it's gonna cost em to keep people quiet about the truth...
democrats and dan rather (& CBS) fail to remember the biggest lesson of the watergate scandal: the coverup is worse than the crime
Okay. Is it also a coincidence that MTV (which, I heard, is also owned by Viacom) began hinting at the renewal of the draft shortly before Kerry started saying the same thing?
It is entirely possible that we took our eye off of the ball here. Berger was taking documents from the NATIONAL ARCHIVES. We - all of us - were assuming that the documents he took were indeed dealing with the 911 Commission. I think we were wrong. What other pertinent documents are stored there?
Kerry's missing service records, for one thing.
Also remember that Berger brought some documents back. As in planted. Could he have brought in documents which were critical of the president for later use by the DNC?? Any bets??????
"Sugar Coat" was perfect for their plan. Operation Fortunate Son was to begin with an attack on Bush's Guard service, an old story, but it would be given new legs with the forged documents. At this time the thrust of the RAT attacks was that Bush disobeyed a direct order to take a physical.
The implication was that Bush disobeyed because he was a heavy cocaine user - that's why the term "sugarcoated" was used. It was supposed to remind the dumb voters that Bush was snorting a white powder.
It was not a coincidence either that Kitty Kelley's book, specifically alleging more recent coke use, was scheduled to be debuted the following week. Remember she got three days on the Today show. I am convinced that if the Pajamhadeen had not fought the fake documents, Today would have given her an unquestioning platform to complete the smear.
Also at this same time the left wing rag, The Nation, had a hit piece specifically alleging that Bush was a heavy coke user in the late 60s and throughout the 70s, including his ANG time in AL.
Why would the RATs do all this? Most swing voters would not even have cared about all this 35 year old stuff. I think the real target of the smear was W's base: rural and evangelical voters. The RATs probably did polling and determined that while Christians could forgive past drinking, cocaine was something else. If the Christian vote could be "suppressed" (to use another RAT term), sKerry still might have a chance to win. At least that's how I see the strategery.
Need you ask?
Thanks for the heads up. I posted my reaction before I read your warning.
I recall, however, a lot of RATs using the "sugarcoat" term during the week of Sept 6-10, before it became incontestable that the documents were fake.
Maybe we need to dig a bit more.
Hmmm... That's very interesting.
BTW, I asked the mods to remove #69 from this thread since the tread I had linked to was pulled.
....Documents which have been edited, using sloppy fonts and time stamps. Jimson Weed, you are on the ball!
Don't forget the release of the Kittie Kelli fan fiction at that same time.
But before you say it; that was a coincidence too. Anybody know if the DNC still has this stuff up on their website?
Note Berger's reputation for being 'sloppy'. Even the 'toon joked about it.......
Did they pull that Ad or are they still using it?
They (with Lisa Myer's help) can sugarcoat sh** all they want, but I'm not biting.
