It’s About Abortion, Stupid (Why John Kerry has trouble on moral issues)
MSNBC/Newsweek ^ | Sep 23, 04 | Melinda Henneberger

Sept. 23 - The Democrats are likely to lose the Catholic vote in November—and John Kerry could well lose the election as a result. It’s about abortion, stupid. And “choice,” make no mistake, is killing the Democratic Party.

...[snip]see last Sunday’s New York Times story FOR MANY IN MISSOURI, PICKING A PRESIDENT IS MORE A MATTER OF VALUES THAN POLICY.

It begins with the tale of Tom Ampleman, “a blue-collar union member who lives … just outside St. Louis, says he voted for Bill Clinton twice and then Al Gore, but … is now grappling with deep religious misgivings about the Democratic Party.” He says, “I’m not happy with the moral issues at all with the Democrats. The Republicans will hurt me in the long run in providing for my family, but it’s probably more important to watch out for the unborn and that kind of stuff.” ...[snip]Democrats stick to the uninspiring and oversimplified notion that people reliably vote their pocketbook, period. ...[snip

Catholics, deep down, know that abortion is wrong, even those who say they're pro-choice.

They may vote for a pro-choice Protestant, but the idea that one of their own favors abortion is abhorrent to them.

No kidding. If the dumbass really believes the GOP is gonna hurt his family, I don't want his vote. The Democrats can have him.

She evidently subscribes to the Dan Rather school of journalism. But she is right about Catholics: They're moving to Bush because they think a pro-abort Catholic like Kerry is an affront to the Author of Life. And they are correct.

A guy who'd vote for Billzo twice and Algore once has no moral posture at all.

It's not the Republicans he should be worried about!

Among Kerry's biggest mistakes was his comments on The Passion of The Christ, Kerry said that he was "unsure" about it (Reuters, "Democrat Kerry Urges Caution on 'Passion,' 26 February 2004, by Patricia Wilson). "I don't know," Kerry said when asked if he would see the Mel Gibson film.

As a presidential candidate, Kerry's comments are loaded with meaning for the future of America. Kerry's ill-conceived remarks are an unspoken message to American Christians that Kerry will strengthen secularists power over believers. Kerry's comments are an elitist attack on Christians and their beliefs.

Kerry praised foul-mouthed Whoppi Goldberg and went to Hollywood for votes and donations. It's clear Kerry, Hollyweirdos and Dumbocrats are in league against believers and stand for everything Christians abhor: They worship abortion, the homosexual agenda, and the stripping away of every Christian symbol in America.

By bashing The Passion, Kerry is pandering to Hollywood secularists. In return, Kerry assures Christian-hating Hollywood that a Kerry presidency will strengthen Hollywood's chokehold on American Christian culture.

Candidates igonore Christians concerns at their peril. Kerry's comments and his positions on social issues must reach every Christian pastor, church, and group in America. These are the things Christian voters should talk about:

(1) Kerry's comments about The Passion have effectively disqualified him from holding the highest office in Christian America.

(2) Transparently anti-Christian candidates do not deserve Christian votes.

(3) Candidates carrying Bibles and going to church (the Clintons) but who vote against everything Christians believe in are not going to fool Christians again as they have in the past.

(4) Protecting the unborn, the sacredness of marriage, and restoring Christian symbols in American culture are very important matters Christians want addressed.

(5) The future of America depends on which candidate supports Christian culture. Kerry has demonstrated that he need not apply.

Perhaps he has hit the bottom and can now start thinking for himself and stop relying on stereotypes when he casts his future votes.

Henneberger previously was a reporter for the New York Times for 10 years,
seven of which were spent in the Washington bureau. She has also been a
reporter for New York Newsday and the Dallas Morning News. She is married to Bill Turque, formerly of Newsweek, who is now an editor on the Maryland desk of The Washington Post.

"The Republicans will hurt me in the long run in providing for my family"

In light of statements like this, I wouldn't count on it.

Henneberger has found the split between liberal mainstream churches and the conservative fundamentalist/evangelical camps. Unfortunately, that story is only about a hundred years old. Obviously, there isn’t much hope for religious reporting when the mainstream media is just now discovering the issues of the turn of the 20th century.

The majority position on abortion can be described as "sometimes it's the best thing in a bad situation." Certainly not "I had an abortion" t-shirts.

There are many, my husband included, who have been rootin' for the donkeys most of their lives and have a hard time changing stripes. But by the grace of God (and good Catholic publications) we now have a Bush sign in our yard :-).

Unfortunately, that story is only about a hundred years old.

She can't be expected to have familiarized herself with the minutiae of the Christian scene when she is clearly not a part of it herself--at least no more than Howard "New Testament Job" Dean is. (Of course, if the split between the Sunnis and the Shi`ites were under discussion, she'd have made herself into an expert long ago.

Good for you!!! Believe me, I got plenty of dirty looks at church (one from the priest, no less) for the Catholics Against Kerry sticker on our car. It takes time (and grace) to give up bad habits.

If you, like John Kerry, cannot decide where you stand on the War on Terrorism or the Battle for Iraq, then don't vote for either candidate........which should be only natural as you probably can't decide whom to vote for anyway.
