Edwards in Columbia: Let's `outsource' Bush
By LEE BANDY
Staff Writer
Democrat John Edwards returned to his native state for the first time as a vice presidential candidate Wednesday, only to concede this point - South Carolina will vote for President Bush in November.
This is a "tough" state for a Democrat, he said in a brief interview after an address to a "welcome back" rally attended by some 1,200 party faithful.
He rejected the notion that Democrats have written off most of the South, however.
"That's not true," said Edwards, a Seneca native who won South Carolina's Democratic presidential primary in February.
"I've campaigned in not every but most of the Southern states," he said, ticking off 11 he had visited.
Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, who kicked off his bid for the White House in South Carolina only to ignore it later, has spent the bulk of his time campaigning in the industrial heartland.
Edwards indicated Wednesday's visit to South Carolina would probably be his last of the campaign season, although he hinted that if he had his way, he would return.
"Boy, it is sure good to be here, I'll tell you that. This place feels very much like home to me. I love coming here."
The South Carolina visit was scheduled primarily for two reasons - to let Edwards visit his native state and to give a boost to Democrat Inez Tenenbaum's campaign for the U.S. Senate.

Don't stay long Johnny boy
Out-sourcing demagoguery sounds just as stupid now as it sounded in 2002. And it sounds just as stupid when John Edwards says it as it does when Pat Joochanan says it. Man, what a stupid issue.
I like that map. In the last poll, Tennessee was Bush country by 16%. At least that was what was reported in the liberal Tennessean newspaper. Tennessee is at least strong, if not a lock.
Just ask John Kerry about the "Live Strong" bracelet he wears that says MADE IN CHINA on its back.
What John Edwards is saying when he says 'George Bush should be outsourced' is, he would give U.S. sovereignty to an outside agency? - like the U.N.???
Either that or he simply doesn't know what the word means. Or he doesn't think his audience knows what it means.
Being both Kerry and Edwards have been AWOL from the Senate for so long (both before and during the campaign), perhaps we should be looking to outsource their current positions as well?
Neither one of these so called 'leaders' had the guts to attend today's joint session of Congress.
"I do not think that word means what you think that it means." -- Inego Montoya in The Princess Bride
Well, it's obvious what it means. The Kerry campaign wants to outsource the entire US government to the United Nations, of course! This fits in perfectly with Kerry's plan.
Amazing! A sighting of My Little Pony!
The Democrats are back, and were hot, said state party chairman Joe Erwin, who looked out over the predominantly white audience and said, You look a little too hot.
The restless crowd was not amused.
How rude, to constantly keep their own supporters waiting for hours in the heat.
He rejected the notion that Democrats have written off most of the South, however.
"That's not true," said Edwards
IS THAT WHY YOU HAVE DROPPED ADS IN THE THOSE STATES, BRAINIAC?
Campaigning in his own state.
Too funny.
Making people wait on you is an elitist snob attitude. Bill Clinton did it all the time just like Kerry and Edwards. They think they are more important than the rest us.
