Allawi Touts Iraq Progress, Thanks U.S.

By JENNIFER LOVEN

WASHINGTON (AP) - Offering a simple, "Thank you America," Iraqi interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi declared Thursday that his country is succeeding in its effort to move past the war that ousted Saddam Hussein.

In an appearance that President Bush's advisers hoped would ease American voters' doubts about the troubled campaign in Iraq, Allawi told a joint meeting of Congress that despite struggles and setbacks, "the values of liberty and democracy" are taking hold there.

"Today, we are better off, you are better off, the world is better off without Saddam Hussein," Allawi said. He added: "Your decision to go into Iraq was not an easy one, but it was the right one."

Allawi's two-day visit comes as troop casualties and civilian kidnappings in Iraq have increased, large parts of the country have come under the control of insurgents and doubts have surfaced at the United Nations that democratic elections can be held in January as planned.

"We Iraqis know that Americans have made and continue to make enormous sacrifices to

And within minutes, John Kerry is on the air to discredit progress made in Iraq and to insult Allawi.

WHY IS ANYONE SURPRISED??????? We're talking JOHN KERRY here. He can't afford to let anything positive be reported about Iraq, and least of all by the Iraqi government! He will do anything he has to to spin it his way.

Kerry now on Fox with a rebuttal to Allawi's speech! Saying that Allawi contradicts his own statement of the other day that terrorists are pouring into Iraq. Says that Bush is not telling the truth about Iraq, and he knows about wars where the American people aren't told the truth.

He has a plan. Gagggggg!

He did the exact same thing after President Bush spoke to the UN.

The lame stream media is already carrying Kerry's water by trying to bash the PM. It's very sick to have to hope for failure in Iraq for the purpose of one's own political gain. I'm just thankful that the PM's remarks were carried live, so that the American people can hear for themselves. MSNBC and CNN have already called it a political payback for George Bush. These people are sick!

If anyone is an expert on self-contradiction it is Senator Kerry.

No, Allawi is NOT running for election. That was one of the requirements for all of the interim government leaders. The coalition did not want the interim government to be using its positions to further their own political aspirations. This is why Mr. Allawi should be given the highest respect and credibility, not attacked as John Kerry is already doing. President Bush scored bigtime with this today and Kerry knows it.

Saw that on Fox too. It is amazing that Allawi who eats, drinks, sleeps and breaths in Irag everyday is lying and John Kerry who lives a gazillion miles from Irag is the expert on what is going on there.

Allawi is a living breathing target for the insurgents. He and his family and anyone he cares about. Kerry should be ashamed of himself.

I'm not totally clear, but as I understand it, what the election will decide is a legislative body that will then choose executive leaders. The main parties are sponsoring lists of candidates for the election, so that voters will be choosing among these slates. I suspect anyone wanting top executive spots would not want to be on one of the slate lists for the upcoming election.

From JENNIFER LOVEN's AP Report
".....Anthony Cordesman, a military analyst with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, suggested that the administration should spend less time staging an attractive photo opportunity and more time adopting a realistic view of the challenges ahead...."

Thanks Jennifer, I thought it was kind of a moving, important, sincere speech but thanks to your excellent unbiased, reporting I now know that it was a "photo op".
Since Mr. Cordesman is the only real "expert" on the subject, who am I to question your report.
