UK hostage's 'release sabotaged'

Video of man believed to be Kenneth Bigley
A grainy 11-minute video carried Kenneth Bigley's plea

The brother of British hostage Kenneth Bigley says the US has "sabotaged" his brother's release by refusing to free a detained woman scientist.

Paul Bigley told the BBC there had been "a shadow of light" when Iraqi ministers said the woman would go free.

But the US, which is holding the woman, ruled out any release, saying it would not give in to the kidnappers.

Kenneth Bigley was seen in a video appealing to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair to help save his life.

The Iraqi government insisted on Thursday that it would not release two female weapons scientists despite statements on Wednesday that it would.

They have already killed two American hostages.

The US says it is holding two female weapons scientists, Rihab Rashid Taha and Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash. The UK says it has no Iraqi women in its custody.

Meanwhile the Italian government has dismissed as "unreliable" claims that two Italian aid workers held hostage in Iraq since 7 September had been killed.

In a message posted on the internet, a group calling itself the Jihad Organisation said the women were killed because Italy had not withdrawn its forces from Iraq.

Nothing to negotiate

Paul Bigley told BBC Radio 4's Today programme there had been "a shadow of light in a big, long, dark, damp, filthy, cold tunnel" when it appeared Dr Taha would be freed.

"Now this has been sabotaged," he said.

"The fact on the table now is that nobody has to negotiate with anybody about anything," he said.

"All the powers have to do now is allow the Iraqis to conduct their own internal affairs the way they should be doing."

UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the hostage had been placed in an appalling situation by evil men, but this could not alter the UK's position.

'Torture'

The 11-minute video of Mr Bigley's plea was apparently made by the Tawhid and Jihad Group headed by al-Qaeda suspect Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

In it the hostage appeals to Mr Blair, saying: "You are the only person on God's earth who can help me."

"I think this is possibly my last chance," he says, sobbing repeatedly.

"I don't want to die... Please free female prisoners held in Iraqi prisons."

Dr Rihab Rashid Taha - known as Dr Germ

Nicknamed Dr Germ

Worked on Saddam Hussein's biological weapons programme

Accused of producing anthrax

Educated in UK's University of East Anglia

Surrendered in May 2003

Considered important target, but not on US most-wanted list

Mr Bigley's relatives have urged the kidnappers "to be all merciful".

Iraqi Minister of State Kassem Daoud denied that his government had bowed to US pressure in deciding not to release Dr Taha.

The decision was made by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi in order to show that Iraq would not negotiate with the kidnappers, he told Today.

"Unfortunately... there was an impression that the Iraqi government made a deal with the terrorists, which we never, ever do," he said.

Mr Bigley, 62, was among three Western civilian contractors kidnapped a week ago in Baghdad.

Video footage released on Monday showed American Eugene Armstrong being killed by a masked man said by the CIA to be Mr Zarqawi.

A second American, Jack Hensley, was killed 24 hours later. A video purportedly showing his killing was posted on Wednesday evening after his body had been found.

I guess it make him feel better to blame someone for his brother being in the heart of Islamic terrorism.

I can understand the family anguish....however these men were not forced to go to Iraq. They went for money. As a former ex-pat with a lot of yrs experience in the Middle East as an independant consultant I was very aware of the risk and the money.

Prayers to the families.

Releasing her probably would not have saved the hostage anyway since these terrorist as psychopaths who love to kill. While no one deserves to be kidnapped, when are these expats going to stop living unprotected and unarmed on the local Iraqi economy?

Mr. Bigley is obviously under a tremendous amount of grief and stress. Otherwise, he would recognize that the US Government is NOT showing the pictures of his brother. The media is reporting this disgusting story.

God bless Mr. Bigley and his family.

One thing occurred to me last night.
Of the few tapes released with hostages begging for their lives, none of them have been Americans. Unless I am mistaken, I only remember a Korean, Filipino and now a Brit. I do not fault these civilians for their actions in such dire circumstance, however, I think it just may be an example of that special quality that sets Americans apart from the rest of the world.

I suspect that the islamic terrorist captors use the same methods on all of the hostages, setting them up in front of the camera and attempting to coerce this kind of "forced propaganda" from them. I also suspect that there has not been an American yet that has fallen into their trap and that's why they have no tapes. These scum would love to air a tape of an American pleading for this or her life.

I would love it if our soldiers were able to find these vermin in their lair and also find tapes of these torture sessions, just to see the resolve of the Americans who refuse to buckle under their islamist terror. Alas, I suspect they tape over the failed sessions and so we'll never get to see Americans being Americans in times of peril.

Just a thought.

For every beheading, I can see justifying a carpet bombing campaign for a day or so. To bring the lslamic people to a point of waving the white flag. But then again, They dont even care if their own people are gased, tortured...They have no regard for life.

But once again America the scapegoat. Blame the U.S.

Mr. Bigley, why would you wish for any other family to go through what you and yours are suffering? Which is what is even more likely to happen if we negotiate with these butchers.

It's all by design...the terrorists dangle this Brit guy out there, put him on camera pleading for hi life.

They know that rachets up the rage between the 70$ in the UK against the war and by extention the U.S.

They KNOW this will increase the hatred and pressure on the U.S. by the the British populace.

They did not bother taping a plea from our guys..not enough bang for the buck...just the straught slaughter x2.

They are playing this game on ALL fronts.

I don't have time to google this morning, but as I recall, "Dr. Germ" used to work at Ohio State University, and did research for Battelle.

She was perfecting a disease that killed babys by causing terminal diarrhea.

The bitch should be taking a dirt nap.

After watching the videos, I can perfectly understand his point of view, and I don't know what his views were before, but releasing the Sisters Grim will only give hope to evil that their beheadings are successfully wearing us down to the point where we're ready to give up.
