(KSDK) -- A Du Quoin, Illinois Marine who died in Iraq was laid to rest Wednesday. Friends, family, along with some who never knew Lance Corporal Drew Uhles, gathered to honor his memory.
Corporal Uhles' military funeral was held at St. John's United Church of Christ in Du Quoin.
Hundreds lined the procession route with the traditional rider-less horse with boots turned backwards in the stirrups.
Lance Corporal Drew Uhles enlisted right out of high school. He had just volunteered for his second tour of duty in Iraq. Last Wednesday he was struck by shrapnel and died on the way to a field hospital.
For a short while last weekend, the streets cleared and the town of Du Quoin converged on a neighborhood park. Friends and family came to pray, to sing, and to celebrate the life of Drew Uhles.
He was the first Marine in a military family. It was something he had always wanted and fought hard to achieve.
Drew Uhles was loved by many and respected by even more. His cousin, Amy Hill says, "He loved being a Marine. That's what he was raised to do I think."

May he rest in peace and enjoy a hero's welcome in heaven.
Fallen hero ping
Please, Lord, find a place in Your Heart for this Marine, and welcome him to eternal peace.
