Zayneb Abu Salem, 18, of the Askar refugee camp in Nablus was the eighth female suicide bomber to blow herself up since the outbreak of violence four years ago, and the 41st female recruited by terror organizations to perpetrate attacks.
Wednesday's bombing occurred despite the general closure imposed on Judea, Samaria, and the Gaza Strip imposed two weeks ago.
Security officials said that no specific warning of plans by a suicide bomber to blow up in Jerusalem was received.
Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz held consultations on the phone with military and security officials following the attack, but security officials said there will be no change in the current policy regarding IDF activities, and that security forces will continue operating in Palestinian areas to root out and arrest fugitives and destroy the terror infrastructure.
The officials stressed that the Nablus area has been the site of numerous IDF operations and that in recent weeks Kassam rockets, bomb factories, and vast amounts of weapons found in the city were destroyed by soldiers and tens of fugitives arrested.
Last night Abu Salem's family removed belongings from their home which they expect will be demolished, a standard procedure adopted by the army against terrorists who wound and murder Israelis.
In the afternoon, two soldiers were lightly wounded from shots fired at troops deployed in the Jenin refugee camp. The two were taken to Afula's Haemek Hospital. Troops operating in the area came under fire several times earlier in the morning, but no one was wounded in the attacks. The army has stepped up operations in the city and adjacent camp and the search continues for Al Aksa Brigades commander Zakhariya Zbeidi.
Elsewhere in the region, Usama Al Araj, a member of the Islamic Jihad Al Quds Brigade was killed by IDF gunfire in the morning after soldiers spotted him attempting to place a bomb between the northern Gaza security fence and Kibbutz Erez.
Hours after the incident soldiers searching the area discovered two 40 kilogram bombs which were detonated by Border Police sappers.
Near Neveh Dekalim in Gush Katif, soldiers shot and wounded two armed Palestinians they spotted approaching an IDF post. The two were evacuated by Palestinian medics and taken to a Gaza hospital.
Two mortar shells were fired at Israeli communities in Gush Katif, but no one was wounded, although one shell exploded in the backyard of a house causing damage.
Near Rafah, soldiers blew up a bomb placed by Palestinians in the area. An anti- tank rocket was fired at the community of Rafah Yam in southern Gaza, but it caused no casualties.
In the West Bank, security forces arrested 22 Palestinian fugitives and terror suspects in raids in villages and cities, 15 of them, including nine Hamas members, in Hebron.
In the morning soldiers removed some of the roadblocks set up in the Ramallah area late Tuesday night in response to an alert received by the security establishment.
Palestinians reported that two people were arrested in Bir Zeit, and shortly afterwards soldiers removed some of the checkpoints.
That headline struck me as odd...it sounds like it was that one woman's 8th suicide attack.
