Why the heck would she want to do something like this? The one prisoner, the one sending the letter, was some white supremacist. What did he have that she wanted?

I don't know if this has been answered yet, but the White Supremicist dragged a black man to death behind his pickup truck.
He was the subject of a 60 minutes story that Mapes produced but wouldn't release the tapes when the police asked for them to protect her source.
(It's a good thing the guy didn't rape your daughter, eh?)
CBS eventually turned the tapes over after she was threatened with jail time.

Must be looking for that Bush connection.

"What did he have that she wanted?"Could be a number of things. Help her to stage another phony story. Obtain incriminating information to include in a broadcast or pass on to, say, the DNC or kerry campaign or even use to apply pressure to somebody else. My guess is...
that the inmate who wrote the letter is somebody the recipient inmate trusted absolutely, so the letter's chief purpose was a "letter of introduction," a "reference" if you will. This would induce the second inmate to divulge information, evidence, names, whatever to Mapes. Both inmates would be discreetly paid off by another source.
Just a guess. Could be wrongo.
