WASHINGTON (AFP) - The CBS television network was forced onto the defensive again as fresh revelations emerged concerning a critical report it broadcast on President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s National Guard service in the 1970s.The network said the producer of the report, Mary Mapes, put a source for the CBS story in touch with a senior aide to the presidential campaign of Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) before its broadcast.
CBS News said Tuesday that White House communications director Dan Bartlett had accused it of coordinating a political attack against Bush with the Kerry campaign.
Kerry campaign aide Joe Lockhart said Mapes put him in touch with Bill Burkett -- a key source used by CBS in its report which cast doubts on Bush's National Guard service -- but that they did not discuss documents Burkett gave CBS.
The documents, which CBS has said it can now not authenticate, were allegedly written by Bush's commanding officer in the Texas National Guard in the 1970s. They suggested political pressure was being exerted to "sugar coat" the future president's service record.
"She (Mapes) gave me his (Burkett's) number ... he gave me some advice on how to respond to the swift boat smears against John Kerry," Lockhart said, refering to attacks on Kerry's own military record, in a report aired by CBS Tuesday.
Lockhart said he and Burkett did not discuss the documents which have put CBS on the defensive over its news gathering amid claims they were faked.
"The Kerry campaign had nothing to do with these documents. There's nothing to this story," Lockhart said.
"It is obviously against CBS news standards to be associated with any political agenda. As to what actually happened here, it is one of many issues the independent review will be examining," CBS News said in a statement.
"The Kerry campaign had nothing to do with these documents. There's nothing to this story," Lockhart said.
OK MSM. There's nothing to this story. Time to move on. I've got a feeling that even the MSM is going to persue this. The sKerry campaign is startting to derail now and the MSM is on "standby" to go with the flow and bash their own candidate. All the alphabet channels will be trying desperately to show that their not biased toward sKerry. Mr Botox better get the vaseline out.
Joe Lockhart ... 'I just call anyone that may just happen to have "advice on how to respond to the swift boat smears". I don't have anything better to do anyway.'
I agree they will want to try to not show bias. That should help President Bush in the debate questions.
Maybe Burkett and Lockhart were trading cookie recipes. . .
Resignation would be expected
Full disclosire of all facts within his knowledge would be the minimun.
But simply saying "I'm sorry" isn't honoring a gurantee. A true Texan or real man honors his guarantees. A weasel says too bad I'm sorry.
Claims?! Claims?! Are the clowns at the AFP really that lost. Yes that was a rhetorical question. I wonder how many DUer's write for them.
NBC and ABC could bury CBS......if they wanted to.
He still thinks they ARE real.
There's nothing to this story...
There's nothing to this story...
There's nothing to this story...
There's nothing to this story...
There's nothing to this story...
There's nothing to this story...
There's nothing to this story...
There's nothing to this story...
WHO is the 'unimpeachable source'?? That's what puzzles me. It's obviously not Burkett (or Conn or Luci Ramirez since CBS never talked to them). I keep coming back to Cleland...
Joe Lockhart ... 'I just call anyone that may just happen to have "advice on how to respond to the swift boat smears". I don't have anything better to do anyway.'
Really? How can I get you my number..I can give you advice on how to respond!

LOL. Oh, I'm sure he's been calling every Texas democrat just to touch base with him or her since it's such a key battleground state...Another routine day for the "nothin' special" demeanor of the one who spent mildly, boring routine days in the Clinton White House.
Why would anyone in their right mind put any stock in any thing that Lockhart says?
Goldberg: It's too bad about you, Dan.
Dan: Why's that?
G: Because your time is past, and you don't know it.
D: What about you, gunfighter? Is your time past?
G: Yes. But the difference is . . .
. . . I know it.
(With apologies to >Shane<).
