In some respects, it is fitting that John Kerry was first elected to the Senate in the year 1984. Perhaps, in fact, his current bid for the Presidency would have fared better in 1984 not the 1984 we knew but the 1984 as envisioned in the classic dystopian novel penned by George Orwell in the mid-twentieth century.
In Orwells novel, English Socialism (or Ingsoc in Orwellian NewSpeak) reigned supreme and Big Brother was watching you. The Party, the ruling class, maintained control of the population in part by taking advantage of the frailties of the human mind, particularly the imperfections of long-term memory and our dependence on physical records of the past to confirm what we thought we knew. The Ministry of Truth revised all records of past events to conform to the current party line, and all hard evidence of the true past of humanity was destroyed in the memory hole, a fiery abyss. Thus, the lies of the present were confirmed by a meticulously fabricated past.
In 2004, John Kerry has been excoriated as a flip-flopper for his continuous inconsistencies inconsistencies which are immediately seized upon by the pajama-clad researchers on the internet, who prevent the true past from falling victim to the memory hole.
Democrats, who have banked on the short-term memories of the American people, are constantly frustrated in their attempts to paint the present as dark and dismal - a portrait that depends on obscuring the positive truths about the economy, contemporary society, and the war on terror. The free exchange of ideas and information on the Internet makes their attempted ruse an impossibility; the truth always surfaces. Perhaps this is why some Democrats, such a Hillary Clinton, would like the government to function as an internet gatekeeper, filtering out information that they would deem dangerous. Dangerous to whom? The prospect of Hillary Clinton as Big Sister, controlling the flow of information in cyberspace, is nothing short of frightening.
In the 1984 of George Orwell, such deception would not only succeed, but it would be orthodoxy. John Kerry and the Democrats would certainly benefit from the twin Orwellian concepts of DoubleThink and DoubleSpeak. DoubleThink is essentially second-guessing ones beliefs, an effective self-deception, to square them with apparent logical inconsistencies what John Kerry might call nuance. By employing the concept of DoubleThink, it is possible to believe that John Kerry voted for the $87 million in appropriations for our troops in Iraq before he voted against it; in DoubleThink, Kerrys DoubleSpeak apparently contradictory statements makes perfect sense. Even if one had the vague notion that, perhaps, Kerrys statement was not supported by the facts, hard evidence of the contradiction would not exist it would be lost in the memory hole, and replaced by a revised record supporting the contention. Thus, the deception becomes the truth.
The visceral hatred on the left of President Bush is eerily reminiscent of Orwells Two-Minutes Hate and Hate Week. In 1984, the declared enemy of The Party was Emmanuel Goldstein an evasive specter who advocated such nonsense as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of thought, all anathema to the principles of The Party. To suppress the power of these contradictory principles, The Party would assemble its members in front of a telescreen to watch video of Goldstein advocating these principles, against a background of the enemy army. Party members were encouraged required to shout, scream, curse, denounce, and throw things at the hated images of Goldstein for two minutes, creating a reflexive, though baseless, hatred of Goldstein and all he represented. Today, one can watch a MoveOn.org rally (or a screening of Fahrenheit 911) it is essentially the same thing. Goldstein is merely supplanted by the person of George W. Bush. It is actually quite frightening to witness. This ritual and sort of primal hate is well grounded in Orwellian Ingsoc.
The parallels between the tactics of the contemporary Left and those of The Party should shock the conscience. Americans today have a clear choice they can vote to maintain the status quo of American democracy (which, though imperfect, is the best iteration of the necessary evil of a central government), or they can delude themselves, giving in to the fear, hatred, and deception propagated by the Left.
To cast a vote for John Kerry and the Democrats is to accept the truth of The Party slogan: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.

Good article. Been looking for a good comparison like this...
I wish there would be a few more articles pointing out that when Bush declared the war was over, the war that was over was the one against Iraq's rulers, Saddam and his Baathist thugs.
However, with Saddam out, a new set of people seeking to be the dicators of the Iraqi people began a new war. They are being assisted by opportunistic islamic terrorists It is a second war; one to preserve the opportunity for another country to experience social and economic freedom, that is very much connected to the war on terror, that is being fought now in Iraq.
We should not forget the many successes of resisting terrorism and brutality in the guise of ethnic or religious purity. Just today the BBC has published an update on the successful repatriation of more than a million Bosnians to Bosnia. This is five years after the main war was
over but the follow-up to that conflict was also daunting.
It will take awhile to create and then incubate the social institutions and personal realization that one doesn't have to jump up and down whenever a petty thug, under either a governmental or religious claim of authority, says so. But once they are there, they will no longer be a risk to others or the source for suicide bombers.
This was posted by me as a favor to Barney who is cube-bound.
