I can't feature Thomas Jefferson(or any other American leader of the period) sitting back saying, "You know we don't need to be running off the Northwest, corrupting the indigenous cultures and making them sick. Lets not bother linking the the country together. It would just be too traumatic.Just think of the environment impact. The American public should be happy with what we have in the East."

I'm with you. When the white man came, the Indians were already running around killing each other. Had any of the tribes had the technology, the number of soldiers, or the discipline that the whites did, they too would have gladly taken over the continent and made it the Native States of America.
