The problem with "voluntary" sharia law in Canada, is that Muslim women don't get a choice. They "agree" to sharia, or they get beaten, or stabbed to death in "honor killings" if they insist on going outside of their family for help.

I agree that's possible, which is why I don't much like taking on any part of sharia. OTOH, I can't say I've heard of any honor killings in Canada, and we do still have laws against murder and assault in this country, regardless of the religion of those involved. Of course if the women don't know their rights, or have nowhere to turn outside their families (as often happens with abused women), it does put them in a difficult place. Anyway, I was just pointing out that it is not quite as dire some make it sound: "Oh my god, they're instituting sharia law in Canada - they'll be stoning women to death for being raped" and so on. But I do agree that there's no good reason for integrating backwards cultural practices into the institutions of this country.
