If John Kerry loses the election, and quite possibly even if he wins, the main thing people will remember about his campaign is how utterly bizarre it was that a major party nomination could have been captured by a man so staggeringly devoid of political talent.
The first job of a candidate is to win the election, a task to which Kerry seems spectacularly ill suited. This is not to say he won't beat President Bush, only that Kerry's contribution to a potential Kerry victory would be similar to the anchor's contribution to an America's Cup championship.
Lest you think I'm exaggerating, some of Kerry's strongest supporters have explicitly likened him to ballast.
"I don't care if John Kerry is a sack of cement," former Texas Agricultural Commissioner Jim Hightower said in June. "We're going to carry him to victory."
At his very best, Kerry is capable of adequately delivering a prepared speech. But when speaking off the cuff, he has an inexplicable penchant to play into his opponents' hands. Bush implies (outrageously) that Kerry wants to go soft on terrorists? Kerry responds that he wants a "more sensitive war on terror."

"Lugging Kerry over the finish line"
laughing, that's a funny headline. Kerry does look like worn out luggage. I kept telling my husband as we watched his Letterman appearance last night, "there's something odd about his face"
In one breath the media admits to being all-out partisan, AND that Kerry is a dud. Oh, the schadenfreude!
Beautiful, just beautiful. Nothing like labeling yourself an idiot.
It won't be easy lugging him with headlines like this:
New Jersey Now Officially A Battleground State
Some confirmation of the earlier Survey USA New Jersey poll that showed President Bush ahead of Kerry in the state of New Jersey. Quinnipiac University is now also showing the race in a dead heat.
Kerry 49%
Bush 48%
Bush 48%
Kerry 48%
Nader 2%
This poll was done September 16-19. The fact that Quinnipiac University seems to be confirming the Survey USA results showing seismic shift in New Jersey towards Bush, it makes me more enthused about the Survey USA poll showing Maryland also in a dead heat.
Not to mention personality, warmth, humor, etc. etc.
LOL! Not much comment to add. I just wanted to repeat that one part. It's so good.
"We're going to carry him to victory."
LOL!
Shouldn't the title be Lurching Kerry over the finsh line?
That's what I say whenever I see a Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker.
The McGreevey Flounce?
Is Kerry even alive? Are we sure they didn't simply dig up Paul Wellstone, give him a fresh makeup job and spray him with Right Guard?
Notice how when Chait says that Kerry is a horrible candidate, he can come up with tons of concrete examples. When he says that Bush is a horrible President, he comes up with hand-waving arguments about incompetence. Chait is married to Kerry, but you get the feeling that he pines for greener pastures.
Dear Commie Jim...a sack of cement has more merit than John Kerry.
Bush 48%
Kerry 48%
Nader 2%
That Nader number is nowhere near high enough. I have given up trying to recruit my Lefty friends to the Dark Side of the Force. From now on I am going to go with the talking point that Kerry is a goner, that Kerry betrayed them on Iraq, and that the only way to have a positive influence in this election is to throw their support to Nader.
What's so outrageous about it? It seems pretty clear to anyone who has actually listented to Kerry that this is exactly what he would do.
Jim Hightower and those like him, will not be voting for John Kerry but for Ted Kennedy - the brains (?) behind Kerry. Neither man is looking out for America, all they want is power.
A perfect visual image!
