September 21, 2004 -- Embattled CBS anchor Dan Rather yesterday finally apologized and admitted that he blew it by using dubious documents to challenge President Bush's National Guard service. But Republicans said Rather must answer a lot more questions, such as what role John Kerry's campaign played in view of its contacts with Bill Burkett, the man who gave the fake memos to CBS.Those questions were fueled last night by the surprise revelation that Rather's producer, Mary Mapes, invited top Kerry strategist Joe Lockhart to contact Burkett because he was being "helpful" on Bush's Guard record.

Democratic National Chairman Terry McAuliffe "unequivocally" denied that anyone at the party had "anything to do with those documents," but also vowed to press ahead with a media campaign to paint Bush as a shirker.
Republicans have noted that the Democrats' anti-Bush campaign was conveniently timed to launch right after Rather's report aired.

Rather said that Burkett had claimed to CBS that he got the memos from "someone who we knew could have had access to the documents," but was abroad.
CBS wasn't able to locate that person, but still found the claim "believable" and went ahead with the story, Rather said.
Lockhart and Cleland called Burket.
Mary Beth and Teddy called Barnes right after the CBS show.
Kerry tells reporters on his plane weeks ago that there is going to be a big story on 60 Minutes.
The Dems new attack, Fortunate Son, is released the same day as 60 Minutes airs.
Why on EARTH would anybody believe there was "collusion," Terry?
Lucy Ramirez is "abroad"? LOL
*snicker*
LOL!
"Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to do!"
Oh yeah..........BIG TIME! :-)
