AT least 250 people died in massive floods across northern Haiti after Tropical Storm Jeanne hit the crushingly poor Caribbean nation over the weekend, a UN spokesman said today.
Meanwhile, authorities were without news from the country's second largest island, La Tortue.
Staff from the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) could not find the island of 26,000 people while flying over the region by helicopter.

Yes. The city in question, Gonaives, would have been blocked from a tsunami from an earthquake to the north of Hispanola.

Please try applying a bit of geography and a modicum of common sense before peddling your theories on FR, please.

Waves don't do 180 degree turns - they can be bent, but not that much. There is no way a tsunami generated to the north of Hispanola can hit a city with a southern exposure. No way.

It DID cover the island, many helichoppers flew over its co-ordinates, and waves recede. It WAS above sea level,barely, and just because hurricanes pull water over an island, it does not diminish ground, nor raise an ocean. we see satellite pix of ouragons. Satellites dont see clouds, the coloration we see is upraised water, swirling around. Water recedes Ilê-de-la-tortue was submerged.

Secondly this new finding hints at what probably happened : a swarm of quakes.

I didn't post the pictures from Gonaives as evidence that probably many thousands were swept away from La Tortue island. The basic facts why I think La Tortue was hit by a tsunami are :
- reports (after 2 days) that the UN helicopters couldn't find it
- total blackout about the north coast and La Tortue ever since
- reports (after 5 days) that a tsunami hit La Tortue
The pictures of Gonaives, the only location that was made public, just helps to complete the puzzle.

We are still waiting for him to retract his claim that the Island of Gonaives was wiped off Earth from the hurricanes of 2004.
