GONAIVES, Haiti — Tropical Storm Jeanne brought raging floodwaters to Haiti, killing at least 90 people and leaving dozens of families huddled on rooftops as the storm pushed farther out into the open seas yesterday, officials said.

Residents said the flooding caught them by surprise Saturday night when it tore through the northwestern coastal town of Gonaives and surrounding areas, covering crops and turning roads into rivers.

If Haitians read freerepublic some lives might have been saved - worldwide freerepublic was the only to report the 6+ earthquake under Jeanne.

Big time LOL! First, it was a 5.5 quake. Not a small one but by far nut a 6+. Second, there is no link between quakes and tropical storms. But I can tell you that you will get a Nobel-Prize for sure if you can prove such a link. So, go on and try!

There is no connection between weather and earthquakes. The hypocenters for earthquakes are typically several kilometers below the earth's surface, and very deep around subduction zones.

Although tsunamis ("tidal waves") can be generated by shaking from very large earthquakes (such as Chile 1960 or Alaska 1964), it is increasingly clear that underwater landslides are a more likely culprit. Try a google search on the "Scotch Cap Lighthouse" in the Aleutian Islands.

Gonaives. the quake was measured between 5.8 and 6.5.
For some reason the USGS had it as a 5.5. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1211143/posts?page=129#129

I know this page, USGS, and I thrust them. A 5.5 is to small for a devasting tsunami. Both recent quakes offshore Japan were 7.0 and 7.2, the following tsunami was 3 feet high at the beach...

Haiti - getting more overpopulated by the minute; soil of hills approaching total erosion - visible in the photo.

In neighboring Dominican Republic, troops buried bodies on an islet surrounded by crocodiles Saturday as doctors warned of health hazards from shallow mass graves holding some of the victims. Governments and aid agencies were flying emergency aid to what some are calling "one of the worst natural disasters to hit the Caribbean," according to Secretary-General Cesar Gaviria of the Organization of American States. Forecast heavy rains that were expected to hamper rescue efforts did not materialize Saturday, but a weak earthquake rattled parts of the disaster zone on the south-central part of the island of Hispaniola. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/05/31/world/main620412.shtml

A tsunamis wouldn't have simply flooded the place. It would have destroyed much of what it hit. They are fast moving walls of water. From the pictures it looks flooded with the buildings still standing, not like it was hit by a tidal wave.

The flooding is from this thing called "rain" which falls from the sky (do some research on the web, you'll learn a lot about it) not from a wholly-fictional tsunami.

"Interestingly, Jeanne, just like Ivan and the Cayman earthquake (also a 6.1) is now over the epicentre ..."

A broken clock is correct twice per day. You will find no relationship between earthquake frequency and weather.

I'm not stating that hurricanes cause earthquakes. I'm saying that there are no coincidences.
Now, the question is : when were there 6+ quakes in that area ?
