STUART, Fla. (AP) - A mental health counselor with a history of assault arrests ordered his two pit bulls to attack a group of people who were riding out Hurricane Frances inside their office building, police said. Two people were bitten and one of the dogs was stabbed.
Ryan C. Moore, 54, who treats anger management problems and addictions, was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated battery for allegedly releasing his dogs with the command "Go get them" while he and the others were riding out the Sept. 4-5 storm.
William E. Schoonmaker, who operates an insurance agency in the building two doors from Moore's office, suffered deep bites to his stomach, face, throat and hands, and Sabrina Stuart was bitten on one leg, police said.
Stuart called 911 while the dogs roamed loose for an hour, but police couldn't respond because of the storm.
"We were all trapped inside our offices, even though we wanted to get into the hallways where we felt it would be safer away from the glass windows," Stuart said. "Bill 1/8Schoonmaker 3/8 had a bunch of wounds, and I got my first-aid kit and bandaged him up as best I could."
Stuart said she armed herself with a hammer and someone stabbed one of the dogs.
Moore fled the building during the storm and police found him in his stalled car.
Moore, who has been arrested on charges of domestic violence, sexual assault and aggravated assault with a weapon, was released Friday after posting $100,000 bail. He does not have a listed phone number and could not be reached for comment.
One of the dogs was given to Moore's estranged wife and the injured dog was treated at an animal clinic.
Is he treating himself?
Even pepperspray or a collapsible baton would have helped here. Fortunately somebody came up with a knife.
A handgun -or shotgun! - would be best, but in a close quarters dog attack its not hard to shoot someone else, as the dogs move quickly and unpredictably.
Self defense should include a range of non-lethal and lethal options.
He isn't a mental health counselor, he's a mentally ill counsellor.
LOL. Actually, it's 1/4
BOL! You have a freepmail!
What possible purpose could this post have? Are you in the habit of making personal attacks on someone who hasn't even posted to a thread?
Treated at an animal clinic?
Why the heck wasn't it treated at The Great Doghouse In The Sky?
Three weeks ago, I was in Missouri because my daughter wanted to show me the 20 acres that she and her husband were purchasing. As we walked down an old tractor road to one of the ponds, two dogs ran out onto the path and confronted us. By their growls and curling their lips, I assumed they were not friendly. I told my daughter to slowly get behind me as I pulled out my Glock 15. One of the dogs, a big Shepherd mix, took off when I put a shot in the ground at it's feet. The other dog, a big Rottweiler mix, stood its ground and it died where it stood.
Beginning with shooting the owner who sicced the dogs on them, right? He's still free to own more dogs. Unbelievable this guy's in the mental health profession!
My God.
There is two sides in Behavioral Hospitals. This guy is Godless. He decided to take matters into his own hands and 'sick' the dogs on patients. This assclown works with me.
It was a joke on someone's tagline.
No such thing.
Maybe since they were his ex-wife's dogs he somehow felt he was making trouble for her. Very weird story
Sorry, it was my Glock 19.
People should all have a sidearm. The second amendment should serve as the permit.
My first impression: He must be a democrat.
Why dont those kinds of incidents ever happen when myself, or one of the members of my family are around?
They would be scraping dog parts off the walls for days, not to mention having to replace the sheetrock because of all the holes.
I miss out on all the fun.

Moore denies he instructed the dogs to attack anyone. He said his dog Blue wouldn't understand the command "Go get them" and that the dog understands only "sit, down, stay, back and up."
"It is absolutely absurd to think I would instruct my dog to attack a human being," said Moore, who claims the more-aggressive dog, Sugar, belongs to his estranged wife.
"My dog has worked with handicapped people and abused and neglected people. He is a very kind, gentle, shy dog," Moore said. "The animals were in a frenzy when Bill reached down and grabbed my arm."
Kathy Schoonmaker said she was acquainted with Moore and his family before the attack and was trying to help Moore shortly before he turned aggressive.
Schoonmaker's husband is recovering from his wounds and still has no feeling in part of his face, she said.
Moore "pushed me out of his office and into a plate-glass window where the fire hoses were stored," she said. "There were little kids up there."
Moore, who has previous arrests on charges of domestic violence, sexual assault and aggravated assault with a weapon, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery Friday and released from the Martin County jail after posting $100,000 bail.
