What they are essentially saying is "It was NOT a waste of time nor money for us to have chosen the traditional journalism route and to have shelled out all of that money for J-School", accompanied with "We generalists are BETTER than you specialists. Sit down and shut up."
Fine. Fine. Fine, MSM. Just keep UNDERESTIMATING us!<

Sit down and shut up."" Newspapers would be better if their workers at least had a good liberal arts degree. Journalism is a intellectual Parks and Recreation Degree. You see the same thing in public schools. Teachers not having degrees in history, english and such, but having a 'Education Degree." So, what you have is low rent intellects, writing boringly and factually sloppy stories about subjects they know little about. And they wonder why readership is down. Matter of fact, if it wasn't for the sports page, the papers would really be sunk. The sports page has the best, most knowledgeable writers in your average papers. Fans and the players won't stand for what passes with praise in the rest of the paper.
