Ex-guardsman gave Bush records to Cleland
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) A retired Texas National Guard officer mentioned as a source of disputed documents on President Bush's service in the Guard said he passed along information to a former senator working with Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry's campaign.
In an Aug. 21 e-mail to a list of Texas Democrats, Bill Burkett said after getting through "seven layers of bureaucratic kids" in the Kerry campaign, he talked with former Sen. Max Cleland, Georgia Democrat, about information that would counter criticism of Mr. Kerry's Vietnam War service.

Yep.. it's big league hardball allright. Like in the old days when the strike zone was big and they could throw at you.
My current theory is this, from start to finish:
1. The documents were produced in 2003 to back up Michael Moore's movie.
2. Lots of people heard about them. They might have circulated among activists.
3. Max Cleland got copies. The rumor is that the Kerry camp was suspicious, but may have contacted CBS, assuming that CBS would authenticate them.
4. CBS got the green light from what has now become a circular authentication squad. Somehow everyone said the documents were OK, because everyone believed the content. Nevermind that Burkett was the sole source of both the documents and the content.
5. CBS plays one last card: they give copies to the White House, assuming that phoney docs would be greeted with instant outrage.
6. The White House says thank you for the heads up, closes the door, and everyone rolls on the floor laughing.
7. CBS marches into the valley of death.
And if ya don't know, he will surely tell you!
I gotta believe that as soon as Max got his hands . . . er . . . hand on the forgeries, he just couldn't wait to get them in the hands of someone willing to use them to smear the President. Old 'Hell on Wheels' certainly has sunk far.
The RNC, Karl Rove, et al., are very patient. I think they are just sitting back, enjoying the show and waiting for the right time to strike back (if they need to, that is). The sKerry campaign might just implode on its own without any help from the RNC.
Who's the thumbs-up guy who looks just like a fat Lieutenant Dan?

That is correct. Once the grand juries, indictments and trials start this will be a LONG nightmare for the RATmedia.
That's Van Os, the Texas DNC and Burkett's mutual lawyer, who's running for Texas supreme court.
I disagree the media will never back down neither will Kerry and the DNC,unless the RNC steps up the truth will never totally come out!
Obviously you are mistaken since there has already been two weeks of RATmedia coverage. This has been the ONLY story for most of that time which the cabel channels are talking about.
There are some things which the RATmedia must cover even if it does not want to such as 9/11 and this is another one of those things. If the RATmedia decides to drop it that will be just another knife in its heart and hasten its day of demise.
It MUST cover this that is what is so beautiful about it. No doubt it does not want to do this but it is no longer in charge of the agenda. ABC has already begun to destroy CBS's credibility even the NYT is talking about it. No doubt they are all hoping that RATher's resignation will put an end to it but that will only generate more questions.
A couple of comments every so often from the White House will keep it alive for weeks. I am hoping that the RATmedia does just as you speculate it will because that will mean the destruction of our nation's greatest enemy.
Oh this is a CHOICE CARTOON!!!!!!!
