"..Rather is privately telling colleagues he remains "confident" that the story, and the memos, will be vindicated..."

The old man is goofy.

"...Three days before the broadcast, Burkett e-mailed a friend that there was "a real heavy situation regarding Bush's records" about to break. "He was having a lot of fun with this," said the friend, Dennis Adams. Burkett told a visitor that after the story ran, Rather phoned him and expressed his and the network's "full support." CBS has declined to comment on the sourcing of the network's story. Burkett's lawyer told the press his client would never "condone forgery," but did not respond to detailed questions posed by NEWSWEEK. Burkett himself refused to talk to reporters camped outside his house last week, although he did tell a journalist that since he began speaking out, unnamed assailants had killed his dog and threatened to rape his wife..."

I'm very worried that the impact of this whole Rathergate thing will to force the Dems to go negative.

CBS insiders are increasingly worried that the credibility of the network's news division has been grievously damaged by anchor Dan Rather's persistent defense of a story which relied on questionable documents about George W. Bush's National Guard service.

Poor Dan he still think's that this is 1974?

I'm beginning to think that Dan is Rather senile or his daughter is guilty as sin. Maybe both.

Gee, wonder if he's still having fun now?

I am suspecting that Rather is going to try and pull off the "George is a druggie" bit either right before or after the debate. Hence, they will be "justified" in what ever they do.

How about some freepers criticing my thoughts here using the timeline with Burkett, his posts, Cleland, Mapes in Texas, sending of the faxes on 9/2 receipt on 9/3 and the broadcast on 9/8

Wouldn't it be funny if Burkett gave the Kerry campaign the info, they made the docs (he thinking they could get a real forger to do it better than he could and he could deny he forged them) and Dems sent them back to him, then he contacts CBS an then faxes them when he first gets them from Dems...

It fits with alll the mistakes and using a word processor instead of a typewriter, maybe a 30 year old flunkie or novice forger..Burkett would have known better the forms and abbreviations etc by the way I wonder if a dem did forge it and used one of Kerry's letters as a format-center justified like this one at their site.(below link) Also look at the letterhead the date year is 4 numbers unlike Air Force 2 numbers.

It is plausible Burkett got the docs from the dems and noticed errors but CBS was pushing him for time(why didnt he give them to Mapes and Rather the first meeting if he had them all the time?) so he faxed them anyway due to time constaints.

I wish someone could post the two letters from the WP next to this one, I don't know how..would be a good comparison.

add this from msnbc making it possible the old received in a brown envelope!

Emily Will, a documents expert approached by CBS to examine the memos, told NEWSWEEK that she was told by a CBS News producer that the network's source had received the memos anonymously through the mail.

The big question is how long will SeeBS play this game before they cut Rather and cut their losses?

Per Mary Mapes, CBS worked on this sorry story for five stinkin' years. FIVE YEARS! And all they could manage to produce were forged documents. That should have told them, four and a half YEARS ago, that there was no story to pursue. These people have become one with their hate-Bush mythology (Bush Lied! Selected not Elected, ad nauseum). They are willing to destroy themselves in trying to prove the myths they so blindly believe.

Have to say, it's been entertaining.

Earth to Dan ITS OVER! The documents are phony! You are exposed for what you are! There is no vindication to find! The foundation is sand and the tide has come and gone washing the foundation away like a sand castle on the shore! Retire while you still can.

Why do we even care anymore this whole thing is over and done in my view I haven't watched see BS in years now a whole lot of other people will join us in not watching it. I am tired of hearing about it.

"CBS insiders"? Sounds...scary.
