"I gave them a sword, and they ran it right through me," said Richard Nixon. Thirty years later, Nixon nemesis Dan Rather might say the same of the blunders that are about to bring an inglorious end to his long career. What -- other than blind bias against George Bush rooted in animus or ideology, or an obduracy bred of arrogance and hubris -- can explain Rather's near-suicidal behavior since his "60 Minutes II" segment aired Sept. 8?
In that piece, Rather revealed four newly discovered memos from the "personal file" of Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian, Bush's squadron commander in the National Guard. The memos seemed proof that Killian thought Bush a shirker whose defiance of orders was being protected by higher-ups such as Col. "Buck" Stoudt.
Rather thought he had a story that could bring down a president. Instead, he has ravaged the reputation of CBS News and made of himself a cartoon caricature of liberal bias. How could Rather have been so stubborn and blind?

Rather, Like Clinton...have no shame, obviously. Rather should resign, but anyone who would use forged documents, and defend forged documents , has no character, or shame.
Yes. Clinton got elected after his draft-dodging, and whatever happened in Bush's TANG service, he still has 4 years of commanding the best Armed Forces in the world.
I do not see what was worth this for Rather. I still wonder if he is not being stymied by his and CBS's attorneys, perhaps, with a threat of jail time if he admits to any of this?
Right.
Rather has the same arrogance and lust to retain his power.
He'll not go quietly of his own volition and CBS might be
worried what he "could" spill should they fire him.
I really have no idea what his motivation is. But honestly, I don't think he is well. Mentally that is. I think maybe seeing the damage the swiftees did, especially knowing what his feelings are about that war, put him over the edge.
working for men like Castro and Saddam
We know that he has "been a pal" of these two (and probably more lefties).
Has he been as chummy with those such as Margaret Thatcher, other conservatives, or even Tony Blair?
So when does Walter Concrete come out of retirement to save the flag?
This is not quite the complete picture.
The smoke alarms at See B.S. were not working because their batteries had been deliberately removed.
Exactly. I wish he'd stick to that.
No, Dan Rather was never chummy with non-progressives. He buttered up to dictators and dissed democratically elected leaders. His whole life's work has been a disgrace in that regard.
Now, we can surely all recognize a publicity stunt. Dan Rather is simply promoting his new book, "Burning down my Glass house." :-)

"How art thou fallen from Heaven, O' Lucifer, son of the morning."
Regards,
Can Buchanan write a single column without Nixonian references?
Of course, you are right onto what should be the main point here.
George Bush 1968 is not running against John Kerry 1968.
Were there draft-eligible 18-20 year olds in 1968 that were sons of Congressmen or Senators who did NOT get special treatment?
Of course not.
Is there evidence that George W. Bush abused his status, or got something that fate wasn't sending his way?
No, there isn't.
The vote is George Bush 2004 vs. John Kerry 2004-and it isn't even close.
I hope this does lead to an official investigation. Someone needs to answer for this abomination.
