Let me put it in more positive terms.

It is the legitimate function of the Press to report scandals, corruption, impropriety, etc. - particularly when it relates to candidates for public office. Naturally, a particular news organization will reflect its bias in such efforts. Our system is basically adversarial to the core; it relies upon freedoms of speech and the Press as the best way to approach truth and expose bias.

In fact, it is generally felt that the legitimate functions of the free press do not include manufacturing lies and promoting crazies in order to "harm" a sitting president.

In the past this has been known as Yellow Journalism - and worse.
In the present it is becomming known as a socialist junta made up of people mired in the same era that JFK2 seems lost in. One with nothing to add but their cries of "anyone but Bush" and the most tortured logic ever written without a crayola.
