Kennedy won't campaign for Kerry in our area after all: Mary Jo Kopechne comes up as reason
Times Leader (PA) ^ | 9/16/04 | BRETT MARCY

First, Ted was coming. Now, he's not. U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy will stump for presidential candidate John Kerry in Harrisburg and perhaps Pittsburgh tomorrow, but he won't swing through Northeastern Pennsylvania.

A hinted stop in Nanticoke by the liberal Massachusetts Democrat is off the itinerary, according to Kennedy's spokesman.

On Wednesday, local officials heard Kennedy would be in the area to campaign for Kerry, the other Massachusetts senator. By midday, the visit had fizzled.

"Senator Kennedy will not be in Northeastern Pennsylvania on Friday," said Kerry campaign spokesman Mark Nevins, confirming a local visit had been discussed, but not finalized.

Carole Lewis, director of the Luzerne County Area Agency on Aging, said she received a phone call Wednesday morning from someone asking permission for Kennedy to visit the Nanticoke Senior Center to discuss senior health care issues.

"I think people who were Kerry supporters told the campaign that they were crazy to bring Kennedy here. If he comes, it's going to be a negative, black mark for Kerry."

“If she had lived, Mary Jo Kopechne would be 62 years old. Through his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought comfort to her in her old age.”

-- Charles Pierce in a January 5, 2003 Boston Globe Magazine article. Kopechne drowned while trapped in Kennedy’s submerged car off Chappaquiddick Island in July 1969, an accident Kennedy did not report for several hours.

No one's mentioned the glaring fact that Kerry feels the need to campaign in HIS HOME STATE.

Kennedy wasn't even in the car when it went in the water. He was snoring away is drunk and didn't find out she was dead until someone told him at brunch.

Kennedy should see "Marry Jo" signs everywhere he goes until the day he dies. Let him know we will never forget. He is scum with money, the worst kind.

When he started the campaign, he was an Irish Catholic Senator from Mass.

Now that he is a candidate, he is a French Communist.

I imagine part of Mass might be upset by the lies.

Was she pregnant?

I always thought he killed her to get rid of the unwanted child.

Why else would he have killed her?

He was drunk, and didn't care about her. He got hammered, was driving, drove off the bridge, got out, and couldn't care less about her.

Two Mass. Senators. Kerry jumps in the drink to save a hampster, and Kennedy won't jump in to save a human.

Am I totally wrong here.

I'm older now, but when I was young my parents always said that Kennedy killed his girlfriend because he got her pregnant.

I guess it is just a story?

The people in this part of Pa. should Thank Mary Jo. Because of her they dont have to put up with this steaming smelly , drunken chunk of dog feces.

Sorry, but yea. If he was going to murder her, I doubt that he would have gotten himself so hammered and obliterated, besides with his money and power, he would have gotten someone else to do it.

There was never any evidence she was pregant. Most people, family and police, know that Kennedy was drunk out of his skull at the time. For the record, Kennedy has (voluntarily) not driven a car since then and as of now, doesn't even have a drivers licience anymore.

Boy, it's funny the stuff you take for granted.

So, it was a drunken manslaughter, for non-Kennedys that is, and not a murder.

It may sound like I'm kidding but where I grew up what I said was considered common knowledge. Nobody I knew could understand why American people of any state would vote for a murderer and communist activist. When in reality, he's only a manslaughering, drunken, communist activist.

Ok, now I understand. I guess?

Chalk another on up to urban myth.
