Martin Peretz Takes Kos to School

The New Republic’s owner demonstrates why TNR is one of the few remaining relatively intellectually honest outlets for “liberal” ideas (and why I still read it, unlike, say, The Nation): A Message from TNR’s Lieberman-Loving Neocon Owner. (Hat tip: RadicalRon.)

Forgive me. But I never read Daily Kos until today. Well, now that I’ve read it, the first thought that came to me is how illiterate Kos is, just plain illiterate. [A thought that has occurred to me as well. —ed.] ... Daily Kos is actually a rant, Kos’s own rant and then his comrades.

 Don’t look at Kos’s grammar. He’s ranting.

It feels a bit demeaning to defend oneself against Kos. But I am one of the neo-con owners, and I am titular editor-in-chief. So here goes: ... But TNR is a heterodox institution, a concept Kos surely cannot fathom.

Charles et al.,

Check out Lee Siegel's piece on "The Origions of Blogofascism" on TNR's site.

No, he's not taking potshots at LGF. He's talking about Kos!

A MARTIN PERETZ VS. DAILY KOS SMACKDOWN:

Forgive me. But I never read Daily Kos until today. Well, now that I've read it, the first thought that came to me is how illiterate Kos is, just plain illiterate. . . .

Despite this, however, Peretz doesn't really understand the game, and tries to refute charges of being right-wing by pointing out his positions on issues like gay marriage or abortion. Trust me, that doesn't work.

Blue Crab Boulevard is still unsatisfied, though: "The other day I said this was like watching professional wrestling only with no ring girls. Now it's more like heavyweight boxing, although there are still no ring girls." (Via the TTLB aggregator page).

Plus comedy gold! This was, when it started -- as I said at the time -- a pretty minor story. It's the Kos Krowd's over-the-top response that has turned it into a bigger one.

MyDD Sanitizes Archives

Wizbang has caught the MyDD crowd going through their blog archives and removing all references to astrology, following the revelation that Kos partner Jerome Armstrong had a career as an astrologist: Jerome Armstrong’s Nutroots.

Update: Everyone’s already seen Dan Riehl’s post about Jerome “Carnac” Armstrong, right? It was linked a bunch of places today but somehow it got lost in my shuffle. Anyway, read it now, because in true-to-form Marxist fashion, the information Dan dug up is suddenly and mysteriously disappearing down the memory hole.

Hmm. This sounds familiarlink: 114 comments

David Brooks vs. Daily Kos

One of the only sane voices at the New York Times, David Brooks, does a deadly accurate character study of Markos Moulitsas “Screw Them” Zuniga in tomorrow’s edition, according to Raw Story: NY Times columnist Brooks attacks ‘Kingpin’ of Daily Koslink: 69 comments

The Kingpin and His Little Kos Peeps

An illustration from LGF reader The Fountainhead, for the David Brooks article on Markos Moulitsas “Screw Them” Zuniga:

The Keyboard Kingpin, aka Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, sits at his computer, fires up his Web site, Daily Kos, and commands his followers, who come across like squadrons of rabid lambs, to unleash their venom on those who stand in the way.

Protesting the World "Peace" Forum

This morning Vancouver saw a different kind of Peace Protest than it's been accustomed to: a modest stand for realistic peace, protesting the standard Utopian "peace" protesters.

Utopia–seeking delegates attending the morning presentations of the World Peace Forum at Vancouver's prestigious Orpheum Theater will hopefully have been tainted by second thoughts for their dogmatic belief system, courtesy of three simple souls daring to think differently from them, and to say so in the street, in public, with signs.

Dag, frequent commenter Truepeers, and your humble correspondent planted ourselves outside the World Peace Forum's venue this morning, carrying signs with various slogans, and had quite a memorable time engaging curious (and not so curious) delegates in dialogue that ranged from pleasant to antagonistic. The most offensive person we met was probably the guy who hit my sign. Then in descending order of negativity: slurs and insults, sneering condescension, sympathy for our pre-supposed mental retardation… the real dialogue ended up being with people who were genuinely curious about how we could be apostates to their utopian religion, and politely asked legitimate questions to which they patiently listened to our point of view. If any of you are reading this, thank you for your civil debate; we may agree to disagree, but I certainly respect the courtesy you granted my perspective, and I hope I matched it as I listened to yours.

The looks of amazement we got from so many of the delegates suggest how rarely they must actually encounter alternative points of view challenging their agenda. Growing up in Canada, we've had more than enough occasions to get used to hearing their view passed off as *the* view, but seemingly they've never heard ours, so we must come across as mysterious aliens from another planet. I can sympathize with their puzzlement, for I find myself as completely baffled by the world view that they painted for me, as they likely were by my recounting of current events as I see them....
Final thought for now... from the dozens of chats we had today, a comment echoing in my memory comes from the first half of our morning, as a loudly sarcastic peace activist established her math skills by revealing that there were only three of us, compared to "four thousand" of them, as if that in itself should disqualify our existence. So symbolic of the left: undisguised contempt for the value of the individual, despite all the rhetoric of valuing "diversity".
Madam, sometimes it only takes three people to make a difference.
Sometimes it just takes one person.
You should try it sometime.

ANN ALTHOUSE: "I assume there is a conspiracy and a strategy to investigate Kos. And it's so easy to do because it can succeed even if it fails to turn anything up, because it will provoke him, and when he reacts, they'll all say he's paranoid, belligerent. Escort that man back outside the gate."

"Hugh Hewitt has dubbed him "Kosputin"." And the ever-popular payola slant- "Kosola..."

The best summary of the Kos Kraziness here:

You are on to something here, Ann. Our writers are largely conservative, but we think it is coming from the Hillary Clinton vs. Mark Warner gap. We outline our reasoning in this essay.

Moonbat Media Launches
LGF operative Nordish has started a new site (sort of a British version of zombietime), called Moonbat Media. I like the name. His first photo report documents the British human rights group Liberty and their demonstration against CIA rendition flights outside the American Embassy in London, Grosvenor Square: Demo Against CIA ‘torture’ flights, London 25 June 2006.

Thank you Charles for assisting in the launch of Moonbat Media! :)

And thank you all LGF'ers for your kind comments -- above all for Zombie, who has not only inspired me but also allowed me to use his style of reporting. I have acknowledged that on the front page, along with the note that 'moonbat' was originally coined by Perry de Havilland of Samizdata.

Yep a lot of you mentioned the likeness of DEVO, and that is kinda funny. Another thing that struck me, and that some commenters have pointed out suggestively (including Infidel Bloggers Alliance), is that the poor kids would be helped if they could at least see their mom. Heartbreaking stuff.

KOS - Armstrong Blogola Scandal

JEFF GOLDSTEIN has a question: "How do you feel about revealing the names of those on the Townhouse email list?"--

Dearest Glenn --

I hear you’ve been demanding an apology from me.  Evidently, you believe I unfairly taunted you for your attempt to turn a story about a secret progressive message pipeline into a story about a single email that has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on Kos’s “suggestion” that an unflattering story be starved of oxygen (the implications of which I discussed here).

MORE ON "KOS VS. THE CLINTONS:" It's the battle of the century, or at least the election cycle. At one point I contributed a little bit to The Tainted Blood Scandal research. See the following
And especially note this and THIS as well:

I do get it, that the Clinton Spin Machine was very effective at marginalizing and noise-making to obscure the worst of the worst of his crimes, scandals and evil deeds and incompetencies. It's one of the reasons that I don't generally talk about, or even write about my time spent on that effort very much to anybody who wasn't there. But when I saw Beck's post the other day, I couldn't help myself. I also admit that I grew just a little indignant at the sniggering by those on the right, (of all places) towards the claims of KoS that yes indeed, the Clinton Machine might indeed be up to no good, and poking around into his past. And even though I am not from the left, (as most of my regular readers are well aware) I really kind of feel sorry for KoS, in that Billy Beck is nail, bang, dead on with his assessment that "KoS" has absolutley no idea nor is he in any shape to deal with what he's just stepped into. And I fully realize that by doing what I am doing right now, in just giving people a taste of what it was like to live through "the first war in cyberspace..."  MORE ON "KOS VS. THE CLINTONS:" It's the battle of the century, or ...

The Columbia Journalism Review weighs in with "Kos: Yesterday's hero, today's goat."

SOCK-PUPPETRY AT THE HUFFINGTON POST: Tom Maguire comments: "Is it possible that my wild guess that the Times is detemined to trivialize lefty blogs is actually on the mark? Has all this burbling about new media and storming the (star)gates really triggered some territorial impulse at an institutional level?"

His answer: "Yes."

A KOS KONSPIRACY? "Earlier today as I wondered boldly through left blogistan, if occurred to me that, rather than the hissy fit I mentioned below, what we're really seeing is coordinated attack on the progressive bloggers."

Meanwhile, Robert Wright is defending Kos against David Brooks.

UPDATE: Hillary hires Peter Daou from Salon, and Dan Riehl is questioning the timing.

Jim Geraghty asks: "Has any prominent potential Republican candidate hired a 'blog guy'?"

He also weighs in on Wright's defense, which relies on his Kos timeline.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Heh: "Nowadays, you have to hire a blogger to fend off the bloggers. This blogging game is playing out nicely."

Plus, defending Kos from inaccurate puns.

Forbes Magazine publisher Rich Karlgaard thinks people should remember exactly how radical and mean-spirited the party of Daily Kos really is: The ‘Screw Them’ Party.   link: 93 comments

He calls the Kos crowd “aging boomers out to relive the radical days of their youth.”

It would be interesting to find out if is a majority of the Kos crowd really are boomers. Many of the comments from that site do seem as though they fell out of some twenty-something's back pocket. Then, again, I suppose too many drugs would make a boomer sound like his grandchild just dirtied his pants.

The Score: Profile of a "Netroot"

The Demographic snapshot of DailyKos.com readers reveals that while all adult age groups are represented, there is a very large skew toward adults 65 and older. In fact, this age group is nearly four times as likely as the norm to visit the site.

DailyKos.com visitors also skew toward higher income levels, with those households making at least $75,000 being 56 percent more likely to visit the site....

Interesting, a bunch of rich old folks. Who'd thunk it?

Swiftboated by the Dinos

The Snark of the Day belongs to Jeff Goldstein, responding to a typically ludicrous post from “progressive” blogger Billmon, who says Kos is being Swiftboated by an organized conspiracy of Dinos, using Rovian tactics!  The bathos & pathos--Kos, he been SWIFTBOATED! BY KILLARY AND CREW!:

SCOTT OLIN SCHMIDT: "By-and-large political campaigns—and even Kos himself—are missing the boat on how political campaigns can leverage the blogosphere."

UPDATE: On the other hand, there's this: "I'd say in this little Net Skirmish the final score would be Kos 1 - Hillary Zip.""Ernest said... Well, I doubt that HRC & her usual gang of idiots comprehends the subtle changes that have developed from Usenet in 1996 to today."

Leftists Gone Wild

The left has become the thing that it once held in contempt. Fascists. All you have to do is glimpse at the comments I get at you tube for a tiny glimpse of the modus operandi of the left. Smear women with the most vile sexual insults, Jew hating diatribes, misogyny. My favorite moniker - whore of Zion.
But it gets worse and it is not limited to the bottom feeders in the Democratic party. I reported yesterday that the Sunday Times ran the summer home  addresses of Cheney and Rumsfeld and where their wives shop. If that's not the greatest piece of Intel for a home grown jihadi - I don't know what is. Over at Puff Ho..........

It gets worse, Saberpoint reports;

Leftist posters at the Huffington Post posted a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of Swift Boat Veterans who took part in exposing the false and cowardly Vietnam career of John F. Kerry, failed Democrat candidate for President. This caused an outpouring of obscene and other harrassing phone calls to the vets, at all hours of the day and night. One call was a death threat.

This is the new left. Say something they don't like and your life is put in danger. Think about it.

A Leftist blogger calling himself "Jo Fish" runs a blog called Democratic Veteran. One of his readers posted the same list of Swift Boat Veterans at his blog, which is still up and viewable by the public. I have written to "Jo Fish" asking him to take down the post, but so far he has not responded.

However, a couple of hours doing searches on the web, newsgroups and blogosphere enabled me to find the real identity of "Jo Fish." I also have his home address and telephone number. I wonder how he would like his private information posted on the internet?

I am not going to post them here...yet. If "Jo Fish" does the responsible thing and removes the list of Swift Boat Vets, he will have no problems from me.

I believe in "Live and Let Live" in the blogosphere. We can argue with each other all we like, rebut and debate each other until the cows come home, even make insulting and belittling remarks to one another. But what should NOT BE ALLOWED is to post information that could lead to physical harm of a person's body or property or violate his personal peace and privacy.

These are dangerous times for truth tellers.

MSM's Job: "Speak Truth to Power"

You have got be kidding me. TIME.com: No One Gets a Blank Check.

The line between dissent and disloyalty, between harmful revelations and vital ones, is murky. Often we never really know. But I would argue that the judicious questioning of the conduct and morality of war is the furthest thing from disloyalty: it is an expression of deep patriotism and the essence of responsible citizenship.

Very often in our history, that task has fallen to the press. From the publication of the Pentagon papers and the Watergate probe to TIME’s recent revelations about the tragedy at Haditha, our job is to speak truth to power.

It’s a mainstream media orgy of simultaneous denial and self-congratulation. We haven’t seen anything so repulsive since CBS News tried to stonewall their way through Rathergate. link: 240 comments  "Seriously, are these people really this stupid? Do they not read the blogs out there who have reported on Haditha and completely shredded the Time accounts and exposed them as being completely inconsistent? The MSM (or as I call them, the Enemy Media) are a complete joke. Do they not realize how completely insignificant they have become?"

Edward Said's use of the phrase "Speak truth to power":

Daily Kos: Red, White and Blue Idolatry

Tonight’s Kos Kid diary is a rant against patriotism: Daily Kos: Red, White and Blue Idolatry & Why I Walked out of Sunday Morning Service. (Hat tip: Killgore Trout.)

DISSENT IS PATRIOTIC, II

It was a small, but stalwart crowd outside the D.C. offices of the NY Times this afternoon. Free Republic co-organizer Kristinn Taylor told me he wasn't aware of any Times reporters or photographers covering the event outside their doorstep. Lots of spirited signs and chanting from a couple dozen protesters--plus befuddled questions from MSM types who don't understand why the repeat offenders at the Times are being singled out. We'll have video later at Hot Air. Some photos from the scene:

The Anti-Zombie

I think we’ve discovered the anti-zombie, and her (his? who knows? it’s San Francisco) name is Holly Severson, who posted a photo essay of yesterday’s anti-Israel protest outside the Israeli consulate, at (where else?) IndyBay: More Photos from Monday’s Protest at Consulate of Israel. (Hat tip: Scaramouche.)

Her (his?) introduction perfectly captures the weird mix of childish naïveté, complete ignorance, borderline illiteracy, and unreasoned emotive hatred that characterizes Western useful idiots. link: 124 comments  " Wow. Even *I* never thought of using a shofar at an anti-Israel protest. You learn something every day."  Hippie Nazis...

I encourage everyone to read in full that last link- a sample:

This blogging world is also about caffeine. It's constant energy. Dressed in jeans and a plain white blouse, decidedly unmade up, Hamsher (of Natural Born Killers fame, AKA Firedoglake ) looks more the itinerant blogger than the Hollywood producer with two West Coast homesteads. When she talks about how she broke into writing covering both politics and punk rock for the alternative San Francisco Bay Guardian in the late '70s, it all makes sense. Blogging, she said, is the "new punk." Anyone can do it. Anyone can plug in, make some noise, make a difference, and just blast away with an unceasing cascade of crescendoes.

A snippet from "comments" is telling:

Let's not trivialize politics when we have women's rights, universal health care, bringing about affordable prescription drugs, saving social security from the Bush/Joe scheme of privatization, bringing home overextended troops, and bringing peace on earth to the planet at stake. All of these Bush/Joe opposes.
