A Brigadier General is a one-star general (like Commodore is a one-star admiral). It is considered a temporary rank. If a flag officer doesn't make two stars before retirement, then they revert to their last permanent rank (Colonel for the army and airforce, Captain for the Navy and Coast Guard).

As an aside, I understand that they've done away with the Brigadier General and Commodore ranks recently. Now, they skip immediately to the two star flag rank.

I agree with the permanent rank for pay & retirement purposes, but I thought you got to keep the title of the highest rank attained. Am I wrong on that?

Negative. BG is a permanent grade. Commodore is a war time rank.

Dear Frumious Bandersnatch,

I thought that in the Navy, now, they referred to Rear Admiral "Upper Half" (two stars) and "Lower Half" (one star).

As to the Army, the general in charge of Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq was a Brigadier General, I thought.

BG's can retire as a BG. Happens all the time.

Regarding Guard BG's, maybe they have some sort of formula that determines your retired rank, such as number of years/points and other such stuff. Or maybe the guy was frocked to the BG rank and never officially promoted. Don't know, but BG's are not like Commodores in that regard.

Cheers

"A Brigadier General is a one-star general (like Commodore is a one-star admiral). It is considered a temporary rank"

No that is incorrect in regards to a brigadier general. It is not a temporary rank. However, the Navy rank of Commodore is actually an honorary title not a true rank - usually it is a senior Navy Captain who is put in charge of a group of ships - his being one.

The navy has two levels of Rear Admiral (Upper and Lower half). A (lower half) Rear Admiral is a one star rank equivalent to Brigadier General in the Army, Air Force, and Marines.

My favorite poem. When Dan retires (in disgrace) he will say:

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves (that's me and the MSM)
Did gyre and gimble (rotate slowly over the Bloggers fire)
in the wabe (FR) ...

OKAY so far.

"It is considered a temporary rank. If a flag officer doesn't make two stars before retirement, then they revert to their last permanent rank (Colonel for the army and airforce, Captain for the Navy and Coast Guard)."

The Colonel may not have been given Federal Recognition of his state rank. Federal Recognition is a formality that the US Government goes through to equalize rank structures of the state National Guard organizations. A state may promote someone to a higher grade if they so choose but their rank outside that state and more importantly their pay remains at the federally recognized grade. That is not uncommon in the Guard. However, the custom is to generally refer to the individual at his highest rank regardless of his retired pay grade.

ABC merely got its military courtesies wrong.

I have trouble believing any of what you wrote. I've been in the military for about 30 years, the last 5 in the personnel area, and I have never heard, or seen, anything like what you posted.

Can't speak for the Navy, but the Army structure still has O7 (brigadier general) ranks all over. They aren't temporary, they are Brigade level commanders (hence Brigadier). If you have a link about doing away with this rank, please let me know. Things could be changing, and I love to learn.
