I've seen a report of this, and no explanation.
If it's true, my guess is that JFK2 learned about
SEALORD during PCF training in San Diego, and was
considering his options to avoid getting shot at
on these dangerous up-river missions.
When JFK2 applied for transfer from the Gridley to
the "PT-109" service, the PCFs were doing "Market
Time" open-water coastal patrol, dramatically less
risky than the later SEALORD.
