Dan Rather's Journalistic Credentials May Have Been Forged 09/10/04 HOUSTON, Texas
Credible charges have surfaced that CBS anchor Dan Rather forged his journalism credentials in order to land a job with the network's news division in 1962.
While Rather and CBS vehemently deny the accusation, our RealStupid forensics expert confirms that an analysis of Rather's journalism degree, obtained overnight from Rather's New York office by our RealStupid janitorial reporter, raises a number of difficult questions.
For one thing, the degree appears to have been printed in crayon on the back of a phony degree from Phoenix University, which in 1962 was the nation's largest purveyor of fake mail-order college diplomas.
Additionally, the degree does not purport to come from a legitimate journalism school, but rather from the Sam Houston State Teacher's College, an institute that in 1962 specialized in the training of typists and stenographers.
Perhaps most telling of all, the degree contains the signature of Sam Houston himself, despite the fact that Houston died in 1863-nearly a century before Rather's degree was allegedly conferred.
Detracting from Rather's denials are longstanding charges that his reporting is biased, that he was too easy on President Bill Clinton, and that he and CBS have been beaming radio signals directly into the minds of the members of the rock band R.E.M.
In a confrontation with our RealStupid janitorial reporter this morning, Rather, known for his colorful Texas language, called the allegations against him "as bogus as a rancher's brand on a bullfrog." The embattled reporter added that his credentials are "as solid as an armadillo's armor."
The campaign of Senator John Kerry refused to comment on the controversy. Fellow Texan George W. Bush, however, said in a prepared statement, "Mr. Rather is trying to use a spider web to lasso a tornado."
