Purging in my mind sounds as if there is a memory system that needs to be emptied / defragged or something along those lines.

Well, yes... a memory leak would eventually degrade system performance and eventually crash it. BUT it should come up in minutes. It's the length of the outage that smells here.

ATC is a "high value" problem, but it isn't very challenging hardware-wise: hundreds to, maybe, thousands of planes to keep track of, low data-rates, etc.... That wouldn't strain a $600 eMachines box from Costco. There is no reason these systems take HOURS to come back up from a crash, even if they are running on antique hardware.
