What tractor trailer driver would have the guts (or lack of brains) to go across that bridge in the middle of a hurricane?

That was my first reaction. What the heck was he thinking?

I totally agree, but why was the bridge not shut down, as others have asked?

Wow, I've been on that bridge. Hopefully the driver made it out okay, and at least it wasn't the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa.

Either a really stupid one, or one who's involved in transporting emergency-related supplies. Either way, I hope he's okay. But if it's the former, he really needs to get his head checked.

When Charley hit eastern Polk County, it washed about 150 feet of eastbound State Road 60 into an old sand mine pit that comes right up to the highway. Nothing nearly as dramatic as this, but a guy was out driving a pickup truck during the storm (!!) and drove right into the washout and was killed. He didn't see the missing road and probably died without even knowing what had happened to him.

What a god-awful mess this is going to be. I-10 will be closed for weeks, maybe months.
