CBS should not waste its time nor limited credibility in now trying to convince people the source was a guardsman - a forged doc is a forged doc and the thrust of the story relating to the forged doc stops upon the submission and the submission becomes the story.

But frankly what CBS should be frightened out of its wits by is the following (taken from the DrudgeReport): "And in the nation's top market, New York, Rather finished not only behind NBC NIGHTLY NEWS and ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT -- but also pulled less audience than reruns of the SIMPSONS, WILL & GRACE and KING OF QUEENS." Mr. Dan, Good-night and Good-bye.

Uhhh...point of order.

It seems as if CBS is taking this tack, "We aired this report in good faith but as it turns out we received faulty information. We didn't lie. We were simply misled."

If they do, how is this any different than what Bush Administration has been saying in regards to the intelligence they recieved that led them to go into Iraq?

If CBS says it, they were simply misled, no harm no foul.

If GWB says it, the response is, "Bush LIED!"

What's funny is that I'll bet there were quite a few eyeballs watching CBS News these last couple of nights that don't normally do so: specifically, news junkies who have been following the Rathergate scandal excitedly.

But since those folks are not likely to be in Nielsen families, they're not being included in the ratings. As well it should be: few of those people are likely to be patronizing the advertisers anyway :)
