There are serious suggestions that memos purporting to show George W. Bush received preferential treatment during his National Guard service are forgeries. And those memos appear to have on them the paw prints of a desperate Kerry campaign.
It was "60 Minutes," the CBS News program, that last week "broke" the story. It detailed four memos purportedly from the personal file of late Lt. Col. Jerry Killian. One of their juicer tidbits -- Col. Killian was pressured to "sugarcoat" Bush's record.
But there may be a few problems. Not only do Killian's wife and son doubt the authenticity of some of the memos, some experts say the type font doesn't ring true. It's more akin to the computer-generated letters of Microsoft Word than typewriters commonly used at the time, they say.
Additionally, prior Killian memos, their authenticity unquestioned, called Bush "an exceptionally fine young officer and a pilot."
Gary Killian, who served with his father, called the CBS-obtained memos "a mixture of truth and fiction."
An opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee is said to have received the documents from a retired military officer six weeks ago. Senior DNC and Kerry staff members are said to have reviewed them, the latter supposedly passing them on to "60 Minutes."
Should these memos prove to be the forgeries some think they are, John Kerry will have dug his political grave. So, too, the Democratic Party.
sKerry began digging his a long time ago, which prompted my "landslide attitude" a year ago, however the "so, too, the Democratic Party", has me licking my chops!

More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian.
The oppo researcher claimed the source was "a retired military officer." According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign.
"More than a couple people heard about the papers," says the DNC staffer. "I've heard that they ended up with the Kerry campaign, for them to decide to how to proceed, and presumably they were handed over to 60 Minutes, which used them the other night. But I know this much. When there was discussion here, there were doubts raised about their authenticity."...."
