INDONESIAN police have arrested a man and his wife suspected of possible involvement in last week's suicide car bombing at the Australian embassy, a spokesman said today.
The couple were arrested late yesterday in the town of Sidoarjo, just south of the city of Surabaya on the island of Java, provincial police spokesman Endro Wardoyo told AFP.
Asked whether there was a link to last Thursday's bombing which killed nine people and wounded at least 180, he said: "That is still the suspicion."
Three others fled from the house before police could catch them, Mr Wardoyo said.
"They were about to carry out a swearing-in ceremony," he said. "It is being further investigated whether it was for certain Islamic teachings or what."
Mr Wardoyo said the suspects attempted to dispose of some documents in a well but police recovered the evidence, some of which was damaged.
He did not release the names of the detainees, Indonesian nationals, who are being questioned.
Police have named Malaysian bomb expert Azahari Husin and his associate Noordin Mohammad Top, described as an expert recruiter for their movement, as prime suspects in the bombing.
Both Noordin and Azahari are allegedly linked to the Jemaah Islamiyah regional extremist group.
National police chief Da'i Bachtiar has also named two other suspects, Hasan and Jabir alias Nanang, who are believed to have been recruited by Noordin and willing to act as suicide bombers.
Every rare once-in-a-while, I think how nice it would be to live in a country where the police can beat a confession out of a scumball...
I volunteer to do RaTHer.
