I'm sure that The Great and Powerful Rather rose above having to personally put fingertip to keyboard about half a century ago -- thus, his memories of typewriters are dim and his hands-on experience with word processing nonexistent.
The latter is almost certainly true. Though he would surely have reason to observe intra-office memos and correspondence that would cross his desk daily.
And, according to his biography, the legendary Dan Rather still composes all of his copy his very own self -- on a Smith-Corona manual. Of course, we don't know how "authentic" a source his biography might be...
