I bloviated elsewhere:

There won't be any real "statement".
Congress is calling them out on it now.
They have lost control of the situation, and the lawyers will take over.
I noticed that Kerry decided to talk to Imus today, which is the first time he has spoken to the media in six weeks. This, two days after Dem surrogates have been begging to get to "move on and get to issues". I don't think the two issues are unrelated. Kerry is trying to shift the focus to his non-issues, and at 12:45, Scott McClelland spun right back around to Congress's investigation of CBS.

I think there will be a truce.

" I noticed that Kerry decided to talk to Imus today, which is the first time he has spoken to the media in six weeks."

We must not forget that hard hitting political interview by Jon Stewart on Comedy Central and Kerry's upcoming appearance on Letterman , Monday night.
Plus his crazy phone call, ala Martha Mitchell, to the NYT the other night.
At the rate Senator Gravitas is going-he'll be hosting SNL soon and if Kerry's pattern holds true, an MTV gig has to be on the horizon.
Then he'll pop in as a special guest in the Big Brother house and will wash up on the Survivor island.

I think you're right -- a truce, but of course the Swifties aren't known as "the Swift Boat Veterans for Truce", and the Bush campaign doesn't control 'em. Rather is under pressure from above, and I'd be very surprised if he hasn't been told, "you've ****ed us -- take the blame, or you're out." Sooo, I'd say, there'll be a truce between Rather and his employer (and colleagues at CBS) until the election is over, Kerry is defeated, and then Rather will retire. I'd prefer to see his mea culpa and his retirement announcement come simulaneously before the election, even if it isn't in effect until after the election.
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent

I think you've hit it on the nose. The moment the call for a Congressional investigation went out, CBS suddenly found it had to delay its statement. I'm hoping they're also getting plenty of feedback from viewers forewarning them that another nonsensical position won't cut it. It's late, so it better hadn't be a "little" response or I'm all for Congress looking into it while I spend my time writing their advertisers. In the end, it's money that matters and that comes from advertisers.
