Here is my take right from my own little devious mind.

CBS knows that if they admit the documents are forgeries, W is incoulated from any and all October surprises that the MSM and the democrats have in mind for him. So they will fight this tooth and nail to maintain some semblance of credibility to be able to slime Bush later.

This is a war Torie, a politcal war but a war nonetheless. They will give no quarter, nor should they be given one. The proverbial heel to the neck will be required.

The strategy you suggest is not reasonably calculated to enhance CBS's credibility, to put it mildly. That was my point. If CBS admitted that others had come up with questions that raised doubts that they had missed, and venilated the issues, their credibility would then be enhanced, even as they might suggest that the questionable memos stumbled upon the truth. CBS didn't do that, and I am pleased they didn't.
