IMO it just doesn't fit....and having family in journalism, am aware how what they write often appears completely different when it finally meets the paper. Soooooo who edited it?

Actually the last 3 out of the total of 6 paragraphs the article contains are similar, though this was the most egregious. That's LAT's version of "fair and balanced": after 3 paragraphs of truth, they have to include 3 with outrageous lies.
