Hugh Hewitt: Killian's secretary says memos are fake
Hugh Hewitt Show ^

Posted on 09/14/2004 3:18:05 PM PDT by Redcoat LI

Lt Col Killian's secretary says she didn't type the docs. From the Dallas Morning News (registration required):

"The former secretary for the Texas Air National Guard colonel who supposedly authored memos critical of President Bush’s Guard service said Tuesday that the documents are fake, but that they reflect real documents that once existed.

Marian Carr Knox, who worked from 1956 to 1979 at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, said she prided herself on meticulous typing, and the memos first disclosed by CBS News last week were not her work.

“These are not real,” she told The Dallas Morning News after examining copies of the disputed memos for the first time. 'They’re not what I typed, and I would have typed them for him.'"

She also said that Bush was 'selected' and not elected, but that their content is true. I don't think we should use this information because of that.

But, as Brit Hume reported moments ago, the secretary did say that the docs do represent some of the conversations she heard during that time frame. Huh?

???? I would like to hear the exact quote here. I am not buying what is being implied by this.

I wonder if this woman is one of the sources relied on by CBS. Here's how it goes:

1. Kerry operatives hear stories from the Bush-hating bluehair about comments made about Bush when he was in the National Guard. She probably makes them up or exaggerates a few comments that she heard, because it seems that Bush was well liked and did a good job.

2. They use that information as the basis to gin up some phony memos to file from Killian so they can tie it in to an ad campaign they want to run this fall.

3. They give the docs to CBS, and point CBS to the Bluehair, who can verify that these "sentiments" were expressed by the officers at the time. The Bluehair does verify the sentiments, but they don't show her the documents.

4. Now that the jig is up, they trot out the bluehair so at least they can get some mileage from her (false) claim that officers at the TANG thought Bush was receiving favoritism.

She then goes on to bash Bush. So.... the question is... is this woman really a Karl Rove operative just bashing Bush to make her look like a more credible witness when she claims these docs are fakes. I think people will see this. She should have said she is for Bush so that people will think she is making it up because she is a Kerry supporter when she really is a Karl Rove operative posing as a pro Bush supporter which will be questioned that she really is a Kerry supporter which will give credence to the memmos. This sounds reasonable. I need apsirin.

Well, well, well.

And another thread/article said that comparing memos that were typed out of Killian's office didn't look ANYTHING like the fake memos that Rather showed the other night.

That explains Dan's stonewalling, they were waiting to find Mrs. Knox so she could get out her comments. Now Dan has a convenient out.

I think we should.
She is partisan, and she is admitting the documents weren't typed by her.
She is only adding more skepticism.

Post #2 has a link to the whole story. It's one of those "must register first" sites, so I haven't gone there yet. I figure the story will eventually be picked up by other sites.

Did anyone ask her what kind of typewriters the office had? Did they even have an IBM Composer that Rather's few remaining defenders claim could possibly have created the memos? Placing that high end typewriter in Killian's office (as opposed to "a type that was know to exist in the continental United States") was about their last hope, without that the whole argument about what was possible goes "poof."

Still undercuts Dan Rather on the memos being genuine. And I don't think he can admit that, because confidentiality of his source (probably the DNC) vanishes upon such admission. He not only has to pretend to remain convinced, he has to explain why he doesn't believe this poor old dingbat, whose story seems to otherwise match his except for this crucial detail upon which he was obviously wrong anyway.

I don't think he will or can take the out or he'd have bailed before now.

Good thing she spoke up before the DNC goons found out about her.

The purpose of brining her out is to throw support to the DNC talking point of "substance of the forgeries" IOW they want her claim of them representing actual docs no longer in existence to breath life into the forgeries.

Thus the forgeries are "close enough" to the real thing.

She is the type of witness a lawyer really enjoys tearing appart in court. She is obviously lying about the existence of "substantive" memos. She is using seminar caller tactics.

Tell a truth=the memos are fakes
Use that to buy credibility=I typed his "stuff"
Hit with DNC talking point=examine substance of "claim"

Kerry is toast. The real question is how many democrats will now want rally appearances with George Bush.
