The purpose of my remarks tonight is to focus your attention on this little group of men who not only enjoy a right of instant rebuttal to every Presidential address, but, more importantly, wield a free hand in selecting, presenting, and interpreting the great issues in our nation. First, lets define that power.
They can make or break by their coverage and commentary a moratorium on the war. They can elevate men from obscurity to national prominence within a week. They can reward some politicians with national exposure and ignore others.

I'm sure that will anger some folks here.
Just a prelude to when they ran Nixon out. For all of Nixon's foibles, he wasn't nearly as bad as LBJ. Yet with Nixon's reputation so trashed, even Arnold got a few looks when he brought up Nixon's name at the convention.
Well, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Spiro Agnew was driven out of office and probably justifiably so, but we have now arrived at the point that I long to see someone like Agnew come back, he was a giant compared to Kerry and the like.
I really, really, REALLY think there needs to be a section or something similar on FR that details not only the libs, but the press's history of manipulation over the last sixty years. Let's put in print in one place the history of sedition that's gone on between these two bed partners. I apologize, because I have mentioned this on several threads, but I am reading now about the Joe McCarthy nightmare (for the record: McCarthy was the good guy) and how the press went after him (yes, our good friends at the New York Times were at it, lying through their teeth, even then) until now, even though McCarthy was right, his name has gone down in history synonymous with evil and bullying (McCarthy was the only one actually bullied, btw)...thanks to the press and the liberals.
The liberal judges, the liberal politicians, the liberal press want this country, and they don't want the Republic our forefathers foresaw. Folks, unless the public wakes up, the liberals WILL win. It's not just a matter now of fighting for the present, but of also alerting people to the PAST or this vicious circle will never end.
Good idea, take the longer view of the forgery & mis-truthes from the MSM and tie it together into 1 place.
Great find!
Hi, I agree with you. I always knew there was a media bias, but became mortified when I found out the truth about McCarthy (he was proven right in the Venona Intercepts). Anyone who was a strong Anti Communist was demonized to no end by the left and their willing accomplices in the media/educational system.
They can start it off with Charles Lindbergh, who opposed getting into WWII (as his Senator dad had done in WWI), and FDR managed to smear him as a nazi using his friends in the media. FDR was afraid that Lindbergh would run for president.
His bad reputation continues to this day, and I just think he was an honest man who just wanted to do what he thought best. When the war started, they wouldn't let him back into the AAF, even though he'd been in uniform as recently as 1941. So he managed to get a "consulting job" where he eventually flew combat missions as a civilian.
So much for being "anti-war". He just wanted what he thought was right for the country, but when the country needed him, he was there and risked his life when he didn't have to.
It's a little different than my FR thread
Why Broadcast Journalism isBut also somewhat similar to it.
Unnecessary and Illegitimate .
Bump!
Ahead of his time, he was. But it appears it was I who was way behind the times. I trashed him in a brief editorial back then. Sorry, Mr. Vice President. I take it back. I was just a kid with a new typewriter.
Spiro Agnew, thou art avenged!
McCarthy's case, and how the press turned him into something he was not (and how the liberals did the same in the history books) particularly wounds me. The more I read, the more I keep thinking, 'this man needs vindication.' He died at the age of 48, destroyed and broken for just trying to tell the truth. And contrary to popular belief (I believed it, too), HE was the one who was bullied. That famous harrange of the attorney on the other side saying, "Have you at last no SHAME?" was the result of that same attorney verbally abusing Roy Cohn for hours. When McCarthy finally jumped to Cohn's defense, the attorney came back with the "no shame" rejoinder. THAT is what the press picked up on and plays over and over and over in clips. As the attorney was walking out of the room, teary eyed and righteously indignant, he turned to an aide, grinned and said, "How did I do?" The press magnified that lie, piling it up on top of other lies, until McCarthy who had legitimate claims and ran a clean investigation, was destroyed.
Amazing speech - good to bookmark. I believe that Nixon got so wrapped up in fighting the press.. he became so concerned that his image was being manipulated he lost judgement. And the funny thing is that the MSM tried to pull the same deal on President Bush... he ignored it. It doesn't matter to him because the truth is out there on New Media.
