Governor Signs Bills On Gun Limits, Domestic Partners 09:45 PDT SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Even as Congress allowed a federal ban on assault weapons to expire Monday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation strengthening California laws restricting the sales of high-powered rifles.
Meanwhile, in another move that might draw reaction from conservative members of Schwarzenegger's Republican party, the governor signed the first major gay rights legislation to reach his desk -- a requirement that insurance companies to offer coverage to registered domestic partners. The signing of AB 50, by Assemblyman Paul Koretz, D-West Hollywood, bans the sale of .50-caliber BMG rifles.
The move stands in sharp contrast to the decision of Republican leaders in Congress not to renew a 10-year-old federal ban on assault weapons. Gun control advocates say the measure makes California a national leader in improving public safety. "California has once again confirmed its status as a bellwether state in preventing gun violence," said Tom Diaz of the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C. "Today's action not only protects the police and public, but stops the sale of a confirmed tool of terrorists. We look forward to other states, and eventually the U.S. Congress, following its lead."
AB 2208 from Assemblywoman Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, upgrades the health benefits of same-sex registered partners that are now only available to married couples. Current law requires insurers to offer domestic partners coverage equivalent to a dependent rather than a spouse. Shannon Minter, legal director for National Center for Lesbian Rights, praised the signing. "There are still many businesses all across the state that do not provide any health insurance benefits to domestic partners, much less equal ones,".
Schwarzenegger enhances his standing as a moderate within the Republican Party, as a supporter of abortion rights as well as gun control and gay rights.

Yeah, this is gonna help a bunch. I can't think of ONE TIME a .50 was used in a crime. Not one.
I'm glad I moved.

Let Freedom Ring,
SCHWARZENRINO
Yeah right that is why LA SF and Sacramento are the Safest cities on the planet with the lowest crimes rates right... Sigh!
That Liberty Bell is pretty muffled here in California.
WWDD? (What would Davis do?).
Davis would have signed this and a lot worse legislation, including illegal alien drivers licenses, spending bills and who knows what other mischief. The issue is whether we are better off having Arnold as Guv instead of Davis, and the answer is unequivocally yes.
Are we happy he's a lib on some issues? No. Let's continue to work on him, so he doesn't become a Specter, but moves more to the middle of the party, and represents the party well for many years.
BTTT
Boy, I can't tell you how relieved I am not to have to worry anymore when I visit California that some punk won't hold me up by whipping his .50 BMG out of his pocket!
Thank goodness he can't run for President!
Oh, I should have said: by whipping out his "pocket rocket" .50 BMG semiautomatic revolver!
Well, I'm glad I didn't vote for Arnold before bugging out of that damn state.
My condolances go out to my compatriots still out in California, who put up a staunch fight against these travesties of the Second Amendment.
And WWBD (What would Bustamante do?)
Had Arnold not won Cruz Bustamante would have been our next governor. What would Bustamante do? He'd have done all this as well as opened the door for more driver's license carrying ILLEGAL Mexicans to invade our state.

Yeah, this is gonna help a bunch. I can't think of ONE TIME a .50 was used in a crime. Not one.
Back in the late '50s or very early '60s a Boyes anti-tank Rifle in .50 BMG was used to take down an armoured car, but that is the only case I know of, ever.
So9
SO happy I didn't listen to the hordes of mindless GOP drones that fell likes waves under the Schwarzenegger spell.
McClintock BTTT.
Thanks for the condolences. I've faxxed letters when AB50 (and SB1152)was in committee, I called my "representatives" when the bill was on the floor of the assembly and the senate, I wrote and emailed Arnold, I called my gun-owning friends to do the same (they didn't bother). It's pretty depressing to get stabbed in the back. I carried petitions at area gun shows for the recall, and feel like I've been kicked in the teeth. I didn't vote for Arnold, because I could see this coming.
Not only was a .50 never used in a crime, but even if it were, we all know that someone bent on using one in a crime will find a way to get it.
One more link in the chain.
Thank you Ahnold./sarc
