North Mississippi State senator switches to GOP

JACKSON, Miss. - State Sen. Ralph Doxey of Holly Springs switched from Democrat to Republican on Monday, saying his beliefs fit better with those of the GOP.

"I am more in line with the Republican stance on issues like gun control, abortion, taxes, education and adequate work force training," Doxey said in a news release. "I have been voting that way already and on some issues like tort reform, I have been leading the way."

Doxey's switch puts the Senate's partisan balance at 28 Democrats and 24 Republicans.

Despite the GOP being in the minority, Republicans have controlled the chamber on several issues, including putting limits on lawsuits. Republican Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck presides over the Senate.

Tuck first won the statewide office as a Democrat and switched parties in December 2002. She was re-elected last November as a Republican.

Doxey was elected to the Senate last year and is chairman of the Local and Private Committee, which handles bills written for specific counties or cities. He previously had served 12 years in the state House of Representatives.

Republican Gov. Haley Barbour said in a written statement that he welcomes Doxey's party switch.

"We respect that he is putting principle before party with today's action and he know he will and should always do so."

Sen. Hob Bryan, D-Amory, said Doxey "has been consistently voting to cut education and consistently voting to cut Medicaid. I agree he will feel more comfortable in the Republican Party."

Doxey's voting record indeed seems more in line to the Republican Party but, nothing like a swift kick in the ass to make a person realize who's side one should be on.

Great speech, way to go, and thank's again, Zell!

Welcome to the dark side Senator. You will find that we here on the right are far more tolerant of dissenting opinions than those on the left. We understand the true meaning of diversity.
