[history]
The lead expert retained by CBS News to examine disputed memos from President Bush's former squadron commander in the National Guard said yesterday that he examined only the late officer's signature and made no attempt to authenticate the documents themselves.

I would bet that the original signature was destroyed. These people were dummies, but not that stupid.

Good article, hit most of the highpoints, now we need follow up on the source to really nail Rather.IMHO, nailing Rather is now moot...he is discredited. I want prison time for the whiz-kid that forged these memos. And I want to know what role Kerry and the DNC played.
Bon Appetit!

I've already downloaded all of the available "factual" signatures from GWB's Guard records by Killian - none of them come close to matching the CBS fakes -
Personally I can not imagine how the so called CBS "expert" ever decided that there might be a "match" - NOT even close.

Rather is more worried than a turtle that has to walk a mile of hot asphalt, and return. Congratulations Howling and Buckhead!!!!!

"In its broadcast last night, CBS News produced a new expert, Bill Glennon, an information technology consultant. He said that IBM electric typewriters in use in 1972 could produce superscripts and proportional spacing similar to those used in the disputed documents. Any argument to the contrary is "an out-and-out lie," Glenn on said in a telephone interview. "
You did notice that Glennon DID NOT say that all of the features of the docs could be replicated with 1972 technology... I believe it's called lying by omission.

This is going to be Dan Rathers apology:
"After an exhaustive internal investigation, CBS has determined that the documents discussed on 60 Minutes were indeed forgeries. Accordingly, Mary Mapes and Janet Leissner have had their employment terminated with CBS."

You are assuming that Rather is a victim in this farce. I think he is an active participant in the forgey scandal.

The signature area of a document did not have to come from a Bush memo. Will Killian's heirs allow his records to be made available?

Word-processing techniques. Of more than 100 records made available by the 147th Group and the Texas Air National Guard, none used the proportional spacing techniques characteristic of the CBS documents. Nor did they use a superscripted "th" in expressions such as "147th Group" and or "111th Fighter Intercept Squadron."
Game, set, and match.
Random documents from the same time period and NONE look like the faked MS Word document.
That is proof that a jury would find beyond a reasonable doubt, imho.
