What seems so obvious as it applies to others is often more difficult to apply to oneself. Mr. Rather is not used to being on the receiving end of the spotlight of intense public scrutiny, and so his instinctive reaction is the instinctive reaction of most threatened humans: to cower into complete denial and defensiveness.
