Dude. I think Kurtz of NR offers the best hypothesis: it is not about partisanship so much as about revenues and audience share. Read it and weep bitter tears. I think because he thinks the issue will go away if he admits they're forgeries, and that it won't as long as he does not. It's curious, really - this whole "operation fortunate son" thing is gaining zero traction and distracting people from Kerry's "message," if in fact Kerry ever decides on one. It's stupid enough journalism; it's worse politics.
