Up to now, the media's liberalism was most unambiguously evident on social issues. Political coverage was the one place where real efforts at balance were made.

Pure, unadulterated BS there, Howie. Political coverage is, and has been for ages, the MOST biased, not the least.

No, it was better in the 1950s, if for no other reason than the structure of news was "Who, what, when, where, why." The "reporters' questions" were addressed at the start of the story, but now "framing" is used at the front of the story to tell you what the facts mean. I've done extensive word analysis of this. Trust me, it was a lot better. There was still some partisanship, but the structure of papers forced them into "objectivity."
