State power authorities are calling for conservation of electricity in the Southern California area following a surge in demand due to hot, humid weather.
The Independent System Operator, which oversees much of California's power grid, issued a 'Flex Your Power Now" alert for the Southern California to remain in effect until 7 p.m., said Stephanie McCorkle, ISO spokeswoman.
The warning is one step from a stage one power emergency when reserves drop below 7 percent.
Although temperatures in much of Southern California are only in the low 90s, record humidity is driving power use. The San Diego area, for instance, has set an all time high although the mid afternoon temperatures in El Cajon was 92 degrees.
McCorkle said that the ISO expects to be able to manage the load, they are still asking for consumers to do their part.

Those in S Cal might want to make sure they keep their beer chilled. I thought the PNW-California DC intertie was to be completely shut down, but it appears to still be up, so I am wondering what that will do to the repair scheduled for now?
Time will tell. It is an election year.

Utility fears rolling blackouts -- Southern California Edison officials on Sunday urged customers in Ventura and west Los Angeles county areas to conserve electricity after an equipment failure at a substation in Moorpark. Tens of thousands of SCE customers in Moorpark, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks lost power for at least an hour Saturday afternoon after the substation failed, officials said. Group to pull plug on power plants? -- Opponents who have fought plans for two power plants between Tracy and Livermore are petitioning the state's highest court to nullify the California Energy Commission's approval of the 1,100-megawatt Tesla Power Project. Tracy businessman Bob Sarvey and the group Californians for Renewable Energy Inc. have opposed FPL Energy's Tesla plant and a similar power plant proposed by Calpine Corp., saying they would add to the San Joaquin Valley's air pollution problems. State tilting at windmill power -- Many more windmills would sprout throughout California under a Bush-administration plan given a boost last week. Now famously abundant along the Altamont and Tehachapi passes, wind-driven turbines also belong on federal land elsewhere in California, according to the long-awaited government study.
