PEARSALL, Texas (AP) -- Dozens of high school students cited for underage drinking when police busted a post-football game bash at a teacher's home have pleaded no contest.

The 42 Pearsall High School football players, cheerleaders and band members were fined $65 each, a municipal court clerk said.

Adjudication was withheld, meaning the charge will not appear on their records if they successfully complete probation and a substance abuse seminar, the clerk said.

"Now we're going after the adults," police Chief Roland Hernandez told the San Antonio Express-News, the newspaper reported Saturday.

Police went to the teacher's home on August 28 after finding an unconscious female student by a road. She was treated for alcohol poisoning and released.

Authorities have not identified the teacher...

Pearsall is an hour or two south of San Antonio, off I35 on the way to Laredo. It was a solid middle class ranching town when I visited 30 years ago.

Maybe it's more of the "good ole boys" syndrome, maybe something more sinister. Still, a teacher (read coach IMO) letting teenagers get drunk inside their home tells me there is more to this story than we hear.

From the article:

"Officials said the teacher and her husband claimed they were asleep upstairs and did not know the students were drinking alcohol in their home."

Suuuuure. I ALWAYS sleep right through parties of 100 drunken high school students. Its not like they were making noise or anything - they were as quiet as church mice. And those 10 cases of hooch? I specifically told the kids NOT to touch them - they were there for my bridge club. Yeah, that's it.

I hope this teacher learned how to say, "Did you want fries with that?" 'cause she's going to need to develop that skill.

years ago, we had a situation with a young female teacher who did things like this. unfortunately there was no drunk alcohol poisoned student lying the road as a marker, so it was heck trying to get info out of the kids, who were loyally close-mouthed about the situation. finally admin nailed her on something else...even then, other faculty women defended the young woman, saying the dismissal was done insensitively.

the whole thing was appalling.

It is so irresponsible for these things to happen. I known so GOOD responsible ones and irresponsible ones, unfortunately the irresponsible outweigh the others.

I've noticed there's something about "teachers" and the "relationships" they have.

I must make clear that this is ONLY from MY personal observation.

That's okay, last year they arrested a middle school teacher here for selling drugs. The woman had been a teacher for years, and had taught a number of different classes (from math to science to english). The principal told me she was a lousy teacher and they kept trying to move her to places where she would do "the least amount of damage." When she was arrested for selling drugs (something that had also gone on for a number of years) she was teaching CHARACTER EDUCATION.
