SEOUL, South Korea A large explosion occurred in the northern part of North Korea (search), sending a huge column of smoke into the air on an important anniversary of the communist regime, a South Korean news agency reported Sunday.
The South Korean government said it was trying to confirm the report of an explosion at 11 a.m. on Thursday in Yanggang province near the border with China.
...snip
On Saturday, North Korea said recent revelations that South Korea conducted secret nuclear experiments involving uranium and plutonium made the communist state more determined to pursue its own nuclear programs.
The South Korean experiments, conducted in 1982 and 2000, were likely to further complicate the already stalled six-nation talks aimed at dismantling the North's nuclear development. South Korea has said the experiments were purely for research and did not reflect a desire to develop weapons.
The explosion on Thursday was bigger than the Ryongchon train explosion, which devastated a wide area, Yonhap said.

Just a quick note about Fox up here in enemy territory (MA). They've had their own local evening and morning news show for the past two years or so. They are now adding a Sunday morning news show.
Guess the ratings are good enough to warrant expansion. :)

Alleged Nuclear Test Site Said to House Missile Launch Facilities SEOUL, Sept. 12 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's Kimhyongjik County, reported as the site of the North's alleged test explosion of a nuclear weapon, is a mountainous area bordering China. Located in the North's northernmost inland province of Yanggang, the area lies next to China's Jian City in the northern Chinese province of Jilian, where millions of ethnic Koreans reside. 90% probabilities there was a pre-emptive attack on Taepodong Missile Base, possiblities that it was done by the North Korea resistance or an accident less than 10%. So the question is : who did it ? China, S.Korea/US/Japan or Russia ?
On what are you basing the statement that it is a preemptive strike? How do you know they did not have an accident or something?
If it was a strike, All three of the Big Three would have to know about it and be in on it, Russia, US , and China.
When was the last time that such a type of accident happened ? Never before.
If it wasn't a preemptive strike then there would be no need for the cover-up to go to these lengths.
And yes, this is the ONE and ONLY case where Russia, US and China would agree. I personally think that Russia did it.

You mean we cover up a pre-emptive strike with a leak to the NY Times that the NKs are testing a nuke?
A bit over the top for us - and the others as well.

Wasn't it reported that there were Koreans involved in that slaughter at that Russian school?
There is not enough known yet to know if this was a test, accident or preemptive strike.
N.Korea was a Soviet puppet state. Stalin is the one who orchestrated the Korean War. 1950 Stalin and China signed a pact that got the Chinese to send 120,000 + troops into N.Korea while Stalin secretly gave air support.
Clintons, with the help of Carter and Bill Richardson adopted N.Korea from the Russians cause the Russians could not afford their upkeep.
Last year or the year before I think in January, Putin sent the mental "Il" horses for his birthday. Every time Russia/Putin gets uptight the N.Koreans squeal and after all Bill Clinton said all they wanted was "respect".

Why is it that I haven't seen any reports of this on FOX, CNN, SKY NEWS, or BBC. I'm here in Australia and am confused as to the lack of coverage of this major event? What's up?

If the Koreans did test a nuke, it is just as much the fault of the Bush admin. We named N.K. as part of the "Axis of Evil" some 2+ years ago -- and have done nothing since then to contain the problem.
To: pickemuphere
In all fairness the cat was already out of the bag and there was nothing we could do.
The only thing we can do now is make it clear that if a nuke goes off in the USA we will retaliate against them wheteher they are responsible or not.

It was on FoxNews starting about 11 pm CDT (haven't turned on the TV yet this morning, though). Most of the latest updates from South Korea are in this thread, including two seismic events recorded by South Korea and China in Yanggang Province, North Korea (home to several rocket facilities) between 11 pm 9/8 and 1 am 9/9, and a report of normal radioactivity in Vladivostok.
