News Media (TV and Paper) require time to put news to press. It takes time to determine course of action when they have to respond to an issue, due primarily because they have to 1. support their bottom line 2. consult their lawyers.

Free Republic and Bloggers have instant access to the Internet (In Mass) and do not have the concern for a bottom line or attorneys.

Case in point, the Beslan Massacre, they barely coverd it on the opening day and the follow up was a pre-filtered and watered down exercise of walking on eggshells. Look at the crisis in Sudan, the only network which is actively following this is FNC. All the others relegate it to the scrawl line.
