The problem with Islam is that it is spread by the sword. Personally, I think it's the Bizarro version of the Old and New Testaments. A rewrite by Mohammed for his own ends. Yes, its sad, but the teachings will never allow them to come to understanding, the ones who/if they are truly sorry just don't understand the beginnings of their "faith" and so are basically doomed to the fate of their own teachings and history. Change can't come when you are surrounded by the same who support you in your belief system.
